Another in a seemingly endless supply of outstanding defensive backs in Lycoming's catalogue, John Scanlan helped anchor the Warriors defense from 1997-00, helping the team win four Freedom League titles and three MAC Championships. Scanlan finished his career second in school history with 22 career interceptions and with two touchdowns scored off pickoffs. A four-year starter that was a two-time team defensive MVP, the Sharon Hill, Pa., native finished 18th in school history with 211 total tackles, while his six recovered fumbles are 10th in program annals. A three-time First Team All-MAC defensive back, he led the team with six interceptions in 1998 and five in 1999, before posting a career-high seven as a senior, the eighth-most in program history. He also earned D3football.com Team of the Week honors once during his senior year. A PIAA football and basketball referee and a college football referee at the Division II and III levels, Scanlan is now a police officer in Sharon Hill, Pa. He was awarded with a Certificate of Merit for his heroic efforts in saving the life of an elderly man confined to a wheelchair whose home was on fire. He also enjoys coaching youth football, basketball and baseball. He helped coach an 8-and-under Cal Ripken team which included his son, Connor, to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Baseball Championship with a record of 41-0 in the summer of 2014. He and his wife, Lindsey '03, have three sons, Connor, Braydon and Jax.
