The only NCAA Division I All-American in school history, Bill Bachardy wrapped up his four-year wrestling career at Lycoming College with one of the best comebacks in school history. An All-American as a junior, Bachardy served as a team captain and leader in 1966, helping the team to an 8-2 record. However, after finishing third at 167 pounds at the MAC Championships when he was pinned in the semifinals, Bachardy refocused for the last month of the season. In the NCAA Small College Championships, the Flemington, N.J., native posted pins in each of his first two matches before he notched a 7-0 win over John Kain of South Dakota. In the finals, he stayed just as dominating, posting a 9-2 win over Eastern Michigan’s Bob Ray for the school’s fourth national champion. He followed that by earning the No. 6 seed at the NCAA Wrestling Championships at Iowa State, posting a first-round major decision before falling in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, though, he posted a pair of wins to take fourth and earn his third career All-American nod. He was elected into the Lycoming College Athletics Hall of Fame in 1987.
