2014 First Team NSCAA All-American Team
Just two days after being named all-region for the second time in his career, sophomore Bill Kerr became the only Lycoming College men's soccer player to ever earn First Team All-American honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Â
Kerr is the second Warrior in program history to earn All-American honors, joining Pat Doody, who was a third-team selection as a back in 1995. The center back was one of three defenders and just 12 players on the NSCAA first team, joining Messiah's two-time All-American Carter Robbins and St. Lawrence's Harry Copeland on the backline. He was the only sophomore on the first team and one of just four on all three teams.
Â
"He is a guy that has been in the starting lineup from day one," Lycoming head coach Nate Gibboney said. "He was a captain as a sophomore and he leads by example on the field and off. He just does a little bit of everything. I couldn't be more excited for Bill."
Â
In two years with the program, Kerr racked up an impressive resume of accolades, including two First Team All-Commonwealth Conference accolades, Second Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors as a freshman in 2013 and First Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors this year. He has also earned two Commonwealth Conference Defensive Player of the Week awards and one offensive player of the week nod.
Â
He is the second player in school history to repeat on the all-region squad, joining Rupert Kinder (1991-92). He is one of just five players in school history to earn back-to-back first team all-conference accolades.
Â
"He just understands the game," Gibboney said. "He is always in the right place at the right time, almost as if he knows exactly what the attacker is going to do before he even does it. His athleticism is through the roof. He has speed, quickness, fitness and durability."
Â
In 2014, Kerr served as the team's unflappable center back, leading a defense that allowed a school-record 0.69 goals-against this year. He started all 21 games and, as a testament to his prowess, he is the only player in school history to earn both a conference offensive player of the week (Nov. 3) and defensive player of the week (Sept. 8) award in the same season. He finished the year with two goals and two assists.
Â
"Bill is definitely a special player," Gibboney said. "We're very fortunate that he ended up coming to Lycoming for a variety of reasons – soccer, academics and the small-school environment."
