WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Freshmen
McKenna Zeller (White Haven, Pa./Holy Redeemer) and
Cara Zortman (York, Pa./York Suburban) kicked off their careers with the Lycoming College swim team, as each had a pair of wins at the Wilkes Splash & Dash on Saturday, Oct. 14, highlighting several outstanding performances in the season opener at the Wilkes-Barre Catholic Youth Center.
Zeller won a pair of backstroke events, posting a 29.73 to take the 50-yard backstroke, and a 1:03.00 to win the 100-yard backstroke. Zortman also had a pair of wins, taking the 100-yard freestyle (58.66) and the 50-yard freestyle (26.42) while also finishing third in the 100-yard butterfly (29.53).
The Warriors finished second in both the men's and women's overall standings despite not participating in relay events, with the men racking up 581 points to finish behind only Wilkes (752) and the women posting 376 points to finish behind Misericordia (750).
Sophomore
Devyn Goda (Reading, Pa./Reading) led the men's team with a first-place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke (27.54), while he was followed in the race by sophomore
Josh Caro (Ontario, Calif./Colony) (29.68). Goda also finished second in the 50-yard butterfly (26.17) and 50-yard freestyle (23.34).
Junior
Callen Jordan (Hurley, N.Y./Western Academy of Beijing) finished second in the 50- (26.20) and 100-yard backstroke (58.12) and sophomore
Theo Gouskos (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) took second in the 100-yard freestyle (52.59). Senior
Andrew Canavan (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) took second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.32) and posted a third-place finish in the 100-yard individual medley (59.14). Freshman
Brandon Vought (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) took third in the 100-yard butterfly (58.70) and Caro took third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.48).
Junior
Emilie Kramer (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) took second in the 100-yard individual medley (1:04.15) and third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.73).
The Warriors also showed well in a pair of mixed relay races, with the team's top two relays finishing second and third in the 200 medley relay. The 'A' team of Zeller, Kramer, Vought and Jordan finished in 1:50.27, just touching out the 'B' team of Canavan, Goda, sophomore
Elena Pikounis (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) and Zortman by five-hundredths of a second. The mixed 8x50-yard relay team of Canavan, freshman
Caleb Beard (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area), sophomore
Will Gillespie (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), Gouskos, Zortman, Kramer, Zeller and freshman
Mikayla Wright (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) also took second in 3:23.35.
The Warriors get back in the pool on Friday, Oct. 20, when they head to Susquehanna University for the Schweikert Relays, with first race slated for 6 p.m.
