Canavan sets school record; Warriors earn All-MAC honors in six more events

YORK, Pa. – Sophomore Andrew Canavan (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) picked up Second Team All-MAC honors with a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke while shattering the school record event to lead a group of five Lycoming College swimmers and a relay team that earn all-conference honors on the final night of the MAC Championships at the Graham Aquatic Center on Sunday, Feb. 14.

Canavan posted a career-best time of 1:56.00 to finish fourth in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing three seconds behind the conference champion Chris Gardner of Hood, and 0.40 seconds behind Bryce Groshardt of King's (Pa.) for third. This was Canavan's second All-MAC honor this year but his first in an individual event. He broke his own school-record of 1:58.72 set earlier this season at the Swarthmore Invitational.

Senior Jilly Flynn (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) earned Second Team All-MAC honors with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, setting a season-best time of 2:34.61. Flynn ended her 2016 MAC Championship campaign with seven All-MAC honors, three individually and four on relay teams.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Emilie Kramer (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area), freshman Billie Strickler (Cogan Station, Pa./St. John Neumann), Flynn, and senior Felicia Sloyer (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) concluded the MAC Championships with a fifth-place finish in 3:46.27 to earn Second Team All-MAC honors and make its way to the podium for the 16th straight year.

Senior Josh Thomas (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) also earned Second Team All-MAC accolades with a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:59.53. Senior Trevor Endler (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) earned Honorable Mention All-MAC honors for his seventh-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, notching a season-best time of 2:12.54. Thomas and Endler both earned four All-MAC honors this weekend.

Sloyer took home Honorable Mention All-MAC honors with an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a career-best time of 2:17.05, her fourth All-MAC honor of the year and first individual.

Senior Dan Apostolu (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) won the consolation final in the 100-yard freestyle to finish ninth with a career-best time of 47.72, third-best in school history. Freshman Eli Engstrom (Middletown, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan) finished 16th in the 200-yard butterfly, also setting a season-best time of 2:11.85.

Kramer also took 12th in the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 56.04 and fellow freshman Scarlet Ojeda (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) finished 14th in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:25.10.

The men's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Apostolu, Endler, senior Zak Kibler (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), and freshman Jon Koller (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) finished 10th in the event (3:22.05).

The men's team finished in seventh place with 257 team points as Widener took home the MAC Championship with 530 team points. The women's team finished in sixth place with 206 team points as Messiah took home the MAC Championship with 832 points.

The men's team finished 5-5 in dual meets, its 15th straight non-losing season and the women's team finished 6-4, its 15th straight winning season under head coach Jerry Hammaker, who reached 200 career dual meet wins during the season, having compiled a 98-48 record with the men and a 104-46-1 mark with the women.?
