YORK, Pa. – All-Middle Atlantic Conference-worthy performance in both the men's and women's 200-yard medley relay helped kick off the 2016 MAC Championships for the Lycoming College men's and swim teams to kick off the four-day meet at the Graham Aquatic Center on Thursday night, Feb. 11.
The men started their run at the championships with the team of freshman Callan Jordan (Hurley, N.Y./Western Academy of Beijing) and seniors Trevor Endler (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick), Josh Thomas (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran), and Dan Apostolu (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) posting a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:36.95, a season-best for the men in the event, finishing behind Albright, which took the race in 1:35.82.
It was anyone's race to win coming into the final leg as the Warriors and five other teams were separated by no more than 0.75 seconds with the Warriors holding a fourth-place spot. Apostolu dove in and swam a 21.19 to move past Hood and Messiah and hold off Widener for the second-place finish and First Team All-MAC honors. The second-place finish is tied for the best in program history and it was the first time since 2004 and just the third time in school history that the team finished second in the event.
The women opened their MAC Championship run with the team of seniors Felicia Sloyer (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and Jilly Flynn (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and freshmen Emilie Kramer (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) and Billie Strickler (Cogan Station, Pa./St. John Neumann) notching a fifth-place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:54.35, also a season best for the women in the event. Strickler swam a time of 25.36 in the anchor leg of the event to move the team from the seventh to fifth position, helping the team earn Second Team All-MAC honors for the first time since 2013.
In the 800-yard freestyle, the team of sophomore Andrew Canavan (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell), Thomas, Jordan, and senior Jon Koller (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) posted a time of 7:30.14, good for an eighth-place finish in the event and Honorable Mention All-MAC honors. The women's team of Sloyer, junior Jess Wimmer (Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area), freshman Scarlet Ojeda (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh), and junior Madison Walmer (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) finished ninth with a time of 8:35.51.
The men's team finishes the first day of the meet in a three-way tie with Messiah and Misericordia for fourth place overall and trail Arcadia for third by just two points. The women finished tied with Stevenson for seventh and trail King's (Pa.) for sixth, also by two points.
The Warriors get back in the pool with the second day of the MAC Championships on Friday, Feb. 12, with preliminary races at 10 a.m. and the finals set to begin at 6 p.m.?Â
