DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – With a young squad, the Lycoming College men’s and women’s cross country teams proved they were talented on Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Delaware Valley Invitational, with the women’s team placing 10th behind a 16th-place finish by junior Michelle Herman (Altoona, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and the men’s team finishing eighth in a 16-team field.
Herman clocked in at 26:09.49 on the course to take 16th, edging out two runners in the final 300 meters, and help the Warriors finish ahead of five schools, including Middle Atlantic Conference foes FDU-Florham and Alvernia. Freshman Alanna Cimerol (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) came in 50th with a time of 28:44.65 and sophomore Carmen Niemeyer (Brookings, S.D./Brookings) came in 93rd in the 133-runner race with a time of 32:47.59 on the 6,000-meter course. Freshman Tiffany Casulli (Port Jervis, N.Y./Port Jervis) notched a 34:20.46 and sophomore Kerry Kearney (Gardners, Pa./Bermudian Springs) was on a restricted run due to an injury, placing in 40:39.18.
On the men’s side, the top four runners all placed within 11 positions on the 8,000-meter course, with freshman Rory McAtee (Easton, Pa./Wilson Area) leading the way with a 48th-place finish in 31:05.65. Freshman Alex Bottorff (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) followed with a time of 31:37.73 to take 54th and sophomore Mike Puchalski (Redlands, Calif./Redlands East Valley) was just behind with a time of 31:46.41 to take 56th. Freshman Gerhardt Gerckens (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley) rounded out the top four with a time of 32:09.75 to take 59th and senior R.J. Wiechecki (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) was the final scorer for the Warriors, taking 79th with a time of 33:38.35.
Junior Kevan Guerin (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) finished in 36:04.45 to take 94th in the 136-runner field, freshman David Sanford (Middleburd, Pa./Penn View Christian Academy) finished in 38:07.98 and junior Isaiah Thomas (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergen C.C.) finished in 38:34.23. Freshman Jacob Kupperman (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) finished in 41:20.00
“The first four men were in close proximity of each other, which is key in team scoring,” third-year head coach Lesley Larson said. “Gerhardt solidified that pack by running in the fourth position and both Wiechecki and Guerin improved their times from Delaware Valley last year. It will be crucial for these two to move closer to the front pack.”
The Warriors get back on a course next week as they travel to Lebanon, Pa. for the Dutchman Cross Country Invitational at the historic Union Canal Tunnel Park. The races begin at 11 a.m.
