Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. – Despite using five players, the Lycoming College men's tennis team scored its first win of the season thanks to winning both contested doubles matches and three singles matches to post a 5-4 non-conference win against Marywood University on Monday, Sept. 11, at the Marywood Tennis Courts.
 
The Warriors (1-1 overall) were able to take an early lead by posting two doubles wins, with seniors Alhoun Lundy (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt) and Son Phan (Hanoi, Vietnam/High School for Gifted Students) notching a 8-0 win over John Shebby and Rick Sun at No. 2 doubles. Senior Rob Smith (Middleburg, Pa./Selinsgrove) and sophomore Mitch Wheary (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) added an 8-3 win over Bryan Scholl and Cole Strange at No. 1 to give Lycoming a 2-1 lead at the end of doubles play.
 
In singles action, the Pacers (0-1 overall) immediately tied the match with a default win at No. 6 singles and the Pacers added wins at No. 3 and No.5 singles to get to four wins. However, Smith beat Scholl, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, Wheary added a 6-1, 6-4 win over Steven Price at No. 1 and Lundy posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Shebby at No. 4 to ensure the win.
 
The win leaves Smith just one win shy of becoming the 11^th player in school history to post 25 singles victories in a career, while Wheary won his 10^th career singles match against the Pacers.
 
The Warriors get back in action on Thursday, Sept. 14, when they host Susquehanna University at 4 p.m. at Bruce Henry Park.
