Smith falls in conference semifinals

Box Score WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – After becoming the first Lycoming College men's tennis singles player to reach the semifinals at the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships since 2012, senior Rob Smith (Middleburg, Pa./Selinsgrove) fell in the semifinals of the second flight to Wilkes' top-seeded Artym Nabokin on Sunday morning, Oct. 22.

Smith fell to Nobokin, 6-1, 6-3, ending his most successful run at the MAC Individual Championships. In three years at the tournament, he won four singles matches, advancing to the quarterfinals twice and the semifinals this season.

As the No. 4 seed, Smith was the lone Warrior to advance out of the first round in 2017, as he defeated Eastern's Karl Finkbeiner in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 and Stevenson's Wornden Ly, 7-5, 6-3, in the quarterfinals on Saturday. In the first set against Ly, Smith was behind 5-4 and facing two set points down 15-40, but he came back to win that game as well as the next two to earn the 7-5 first-set win.

Smith is the first Warrior since 2015 to advance to the MAC Individual semifinals when Zack Collevechio '15 and senior Zachary High (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) did so as a No. 4 doubles team. The last singles player to reach the semifinals was Jason Mifsud '13, who won the No. 1 singles flight in 2012.

Smith is 29-19 in his career in singles play, which is sixth in the school's record book. He is 6-3 this season.

The Warriors have completed the fall portion of its 2017-18 schedule with a 3-4 record. They kick off the 2018 portion of its schedule at Mount Aloysius on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 3 p.m.
