Warriors sweep Wildcats to open 2016-17

Box Score WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Bryce Jones (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) and Evan Bennetch (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Bible Baptist School) have grown into the kind of program players that every team needs and on Monday afternoon, Sept, 5, the seniors delivered season-opening wins in both singles and doubles action to lead the Lycoming College men's tennis team to a 9-0 win over Penn College on a sunny Labor Day at Bruce Henry Park.
As freshmen, Jones and Bennetch played on a team that fell, 7-2, to the Wildcats during a winless campaign, but four years later, the Warriors (1-0 overall) dominated all flights, with only Bennetch allowing more than three games to an opponent.

The Warriors swept doubles play, with the No. 2 team of Bennetch and freshman Mitch Wheary (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) posting an 8-1 win over Ben Morton and Austin Adams and the No. 1 team of Jones and junior Rob Smith (Middleburg, Pa./Selinsgrove) notching an identical 8-1 win over Blake Whitmore and Ethan Rosler.

Playing shorthanded, the Wildcats (0-1 overall) gave up points at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, so a 6-2, 6-0 win by High over Adams at No. 5 clinched the match. Smith added a 6-0, 6-1 win over Rosler at No. 2 and Wheary downed Morton, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4 to make it 7-0 and leave the two seniors on the court.

Jones polished off a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Blake Whitmire at No. 1 and Bennetch clinched the shutout with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Matthew Elliott at No. 3 for his 10th career singles win.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Sept. 10, when they head to defending MAC Freedom champion Wilkes for an 11 a.m. match.
