Warriors ready for Homecoming showdown with Pride

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - After a fourth-quarter comeback helped the Lycoming College football team reach .500, the team will return home to face Middle Atlantic Conference foe Widener on Saturday, Oct. 1, in a Homecoming showdown at David Person Field.

The Warriors (2-2 overall, 1-2 MAC) are coming off a 28-24 win over Misericordia. Senior Blake Bowman spearheaded a second-half comeback, scoring the game-winning touchdown with 6:50 left in the fourth quarter.

Widener (2-1 overall, 2-0 MAC) withstood a second-half rally from Wilkes to hang on for a 25-23 win in its last outing.  Sophomore Donte Harrell led the Pride with 143 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Warrior Notes
• Senior Blake Bowman needs one more rushing touchdown to tie Brian Thompson (1995-98) and Joe Parsnik (1982-85) for third in school history with 28.

• Bowman leads the MAC with eight rushing touchdowns and 479 rushing yards.

• Junior Mike Ward has been a part of a caused turnover in each of the first four games this year.

• Senior Chase Whiteman is six completions shy of becoming the 14th quarterback in program history to post 200 in a career.

• Sophomore Nick Costello needs two more receptions to reach 50 in his career.

• The Warriors lead the MAC with a net average of 37.58 yards per punt, thanks to freshman Brandon Miller, who is second in the league with 41.3 yards per boot.

• Seniors Jon Rummel and Tyler Smith are both one tackle shy of 50 in their careers and 0.5 tackles for loss shy of 10.

The Bowman Watch
As has seemingly been custom for running backs in the Mike Clark era, senior Blake Bowman is looking to leave a large impact on the college's record book. Some milestones that Bowman, who set a school single-season record with 18 rushing touchdowns is approaching include:
- 6 rushing yards from tying Kevin McVey (1976-78) for seventh in program history with 2,159 yards
- 2 touchdowns from tying Tim Deasey (1998-01) for second in school history with 29 rushing touchdowns
- 1 100-yard rushing game from tying Deasey for fourth in school history with 10
- 157 all-purpose yards from tying Troy Erdman for 11th in school history with 2,857 yards
- 1 touchdown from becoming the fifth Warrior to find the endzone 30 times in a career

Coming Back
Senior quarterback Chase Whiteman has engineered three second-half comebacks in his career, including the 14-point fourth quarter that helped Lycoming overcome Misericordia, 28-24. Whiteman's first career win came against Wilkes in 2015, and he threw two touchdown passes, one late in the third quarter and one early in the fourth to turn a 24-20 deficit to a 10-point lead en route to a 48-24 route. Against Delaware Valley in 2015, Whiteman helped turn a 42-21 deficit into a 43-42 win thanks to a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown in the game's final seven minutes. Against Misericordia, Whiteman led the Warriors back from a 24-14 deficit early in the fourth quarter by going 3-for-4 for 37 yards and a touchdown in the game's final 14 minutes.

Forcing It
Junior safety Mike Ward has been a part of a turnover in each of the first four games this year. He posted a first-quarter fumble recovery against Susquehanna that led to a Lycoming touchdown. Against King's, he dove for a first-quarter interception that led to another touchdown. He added a fourth-quarter fumble recovery against Albright and he forced a fumble in the first quarter against Misericordia. His four straight games of causing a turnover is the longest for the team since Ray Bierbach had a forced fumble and three interceptions during a run from Sept. 26-Oct. 17, 2009.

A Big Boot
Freshman Brandon Miller has gotten out to an impressive start as Lycoming's punter. The Slatington, Pa., native is averaging 41.3 yards through his first 19 punts, which is already the second-highest single-season average in program history. Miller has a 59-yarder to his credit, along with four inside the 20, one touchback and he has forced four fair catches. The Warriors are netting a MAC-best 37.58 yards per punt, which is 21st-best in Division III.

MAC leader
Senior Blake Bowman is not just leaving an impact on the Lycoming College record book. He is also making an impact on a conference and national level. His eight rushing touchdowns lead the MAC and are second in Division III, while his 479 rushing yards also lead the league and are 13th in the nation. Bowman's average of 12.0 points per game also leads the league and is 24th nationally, while his 157.0 all-purpose yards tops the MAC and is 41st in the country.

Where There's a Will
Freshman Korahn Williams had a breakthrough performance in his hometown against Albright. The Reading High graduate picked up a fumble and had an interception which he returned for 39 yards that set up Lycoming's only score of the game. The safety is the first Warrior to post an interception and fumble recovery in a game since Ryan Mihoci did it against Misericordia in 2013. He continued his great play against Misericordia, picking up another fumble recovery in the first quarter of that game to tie junior teammate Mike Ward for the league lead in fumble recoveries.

Sophomores shine
Sophomore wide receiver Nick Costello is continuing to impress in his first year as a starter for the Warriors. The 6-5 Costello, thanks to his first 100-yard game against King's and back-to-back 80-yard efforts at Albright and Misericordia, is third in the league with 326 receiving yards and sixth in receptions per game (5.0). Fellow sophomore Kyle Slivka-Fralin is tied for third in the conference with three receiving touchdowns.

Whiteman finds his stride
Senior quarterback Chase Whiteman has been dependable during his 14 career starts, racking up a resume that is consistently growing in stature. Some of his approaching milestones include:
- 31 yards shy of becoming the 12th quarterback in program history to throw for 2,700 in a career
- 6 completions from becoming the 14th player in school history to complete 200 in a career
- 57.1 completion percentage is second in program history
- 133.09 passing efficiency currently sits fourth in program history

Honoring Doc
Before today's game, Lycoming will honor Ed Dougherty '92 for his selection into the Middle Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame. In his four years with the Warriors, the Philadelphia, Pa., native racked up a career record of 39-7, including a regular-season record of 34-4 as the team's quarterback. He led the team to three MAC titles and three NCAA Division III Tournaments, including a run to the national title game in 1990. After passing for more than 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns in his first two years, including picking up Honorable Mention Pizza Hut All-American honors as a sophomore, he never lost a regular season game again, reeling off 18 straight wins to cap his career. As a junior in 1990, he won his first of two straight MAC Player of the Year awards while passing for 2,706 yards and 22 touchdowns. He set a school-record with 226 completions and earned Honorable Mention Champion USA All-American honors. As a senior, he passed for 2,642 records and completed 57.6 percent of his passes while earning Third Team Champion USA All-American honors. Twenty-five years after the end of his career, Dougherty still holds no less than nine school career and single-season records, including the career records for wins (39), completions (720), passing yards (8,850) and touchdowns responsible for (95). Dougherty was elected into the Lycoming College Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997. He is the sixth Warrior to earn induction into the MAC Hall of Fame.
