ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior 149-pounder
Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa./Line Mountain) and senior 165-pounder
Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) each won individual titles and the Lycoming College wrestling team won a tournament for the first time since 2003 as it took first in a field of 12 teams at the RIT Invitational at Gordon Field House on Saturday, Dec. 3.
Â
Lansberry was named the tournament's Tony Wallace Award winner as the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler as the nation's top-ranked 149-pounder posted a 4-3 win over Jarrad Lasko of John Carroll in the finals. Barger, ranked fifth in the nation at 165 pounds, notched a 2-1 decision over Oswego's Troy Seymour, a contender in the latest d3wrestle.com rankings, in his championship bout.
Â
Lycoming had nine wrestlers place at the tournament, as the team racked up 130 points, finishing nine ahead of 15
th-ranked SUNY Oneonta and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. It was the team's first tournament win for Lycoming since claiming the Johnson & Wales Invitational in the 2003-04 season.
Â
In addition to the two weight class winners, sophomore
Trevor Corl (Howard, Pa./Bellfonte) took second at 157 pounds, sophomore
Joe Santomarco (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) (141) and junior
Brandon Conrad (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) (174) each took third, sophomore
Tom Lynd (Woodbury Heights, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) (HWT) and freshman
Hadyn Swartwood (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) (157) took fourth and freshman
Travis Ogden (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) (197) and sophomore
Andy Aguilar (Muncy, Pa./Muncy Area) (141) took fifth.
Â
Lansberry rolled through the tournament field and improved to 16-0 on the season, posting a pair of tech falls to open the tournament before notching a 9-0 major decision over Oneonta's Nicholas Heck in the quarterfinals and a 14-4 major decision of Oswego's Joey Bush in the semifinals. In the finals, against Lasko, each grappler had an escape to tie the bout at one in the third period when Lansberry earned a takedown. After a penalty point and escape for Lasko tied it, Lansberry earned the riding time point to claim the decision.
Â
The win over Lasko was the 120
th of Lansberry's career, moving him past Eric Walker (1996-00) for third in program history. He is one win shy of Andy Lausier's mark of 121 set from 1996-01, which is second in program history and seven shy of Royce Eyer's school record of 127 set from 1997-01.
Â
Barger opened his tournament with a pair of pins before posting a 7-2 win over Alfred State's Tristan Almeter in the quarterfinals. He followed that with a 5-1 win over Jimmy Suhayda of Oswego in the semifinals and earned the championship with the 2-1 win over Seymour. Both wrestlers earned an escape in the match and Barger also earned the riding time point.
Â
Corl made a surprise trip to the championship match at 157 pounds, as he opened the tournament with a  pair of technical falls. After a 6-3 win over Norwich's Ben Swanson in the quarterfinals, he posted a 5-3 win over RIT's Dempsey King, listed as a contender in the d3wrestle.com rankings, in the semifinals. He lost a 4-1 decision to Scranton's Ian Evans, another contender, in the championship.
Â
Â
Santomarco lost a tight 3-2 decision in the quarterfinals, but rebounded with four straight wins, posting a takedown to beat James Matias of Wesleyan, 5-3, in sudden victory overtime in the third-place match at 141 pounds. Conrad dropped a tight 3-2 match in the semifinals to Trevor Hoffmier before he rebounded with a pair of wins, including a pin of Oswego's Michael Southwick in 4:27, to take third place at 174.
Â
Lynd dropped out of the championship bracket in the semifinals, but still managed four falls and a 4-2 record en route to his fourth-place finish at heavyweight. Swartwood also lost in the semifinals, a close 8-7 decision to Scranton's Evans, but finished 3-2 with a tech fall to take fourth at 157.
Â
Ogden went 5-2 en route to his fifth place finish, posting two falls and a major decision at 197 pounds. Aguilar went 4-2 to take fifth at 141, posting three wins by decision.
