Mifsud sets mark as Warriors fall to Crusaders

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Senior Jason Mifsud (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) became the first player in at least 50 years to win 13 singles matches in a season to lead the Lycoming College men’s tennis team, but Susquehanna University was able to post an 8-1 win at the James Garrett Sports Complex on Thursday afternoon, April 18, in non-conference action.
 
Mifsud improved to 13-1 overall and 8-0 in dual matches with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Michael Hickey at No. 1 singles. The Warriors’ first MAC Individual Singles Champion, Mifsud has notched a 43-11 record in his career and is the most decorated tennis player since Tony Pollitt ’62, who posted 10 dual meet wins in 1961 before reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA Small College Atlantic Coast Championships in singles play and the finals in doubles play.
 
At No. 5 singles, junior Cody Butler (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville Area) forced a tiebreaker before falling 6-1, 3-6, 10-7 to Mats Haaland, but the Crusaders (5-11 overall) won the other five singles and three doubles to notch eight points.
 
The Warriors (1-7 overall) get back on the court on Saturday, April 20, when they face Albright at 1 p.m. in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Bruce Henry Park.
