WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Three more school records fell on Saturday, Feb. 9, as the Lycoming College swim teams competed at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships, with the men’s swimming team setting records in the 200-yard medley relay, the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke as the Warriors stayed in third place and the women stayed in fifth through the first two days of the event.
The men’s team started off the day with a record-setting performance in the 200-yard medley relay, as the team of sophomore
Daniel Woods (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North), senior
Nate Oropollo (Aldan, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara), freshman
Kyle Garase (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) and junior
C.J. Arhontakis (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) notched a time of 1:37.84, smashing the record of 1:38.35 set in 2004.
Woods started the race with a split of 25.74 in the backstroke before Oropollo swam a 27.70 in the breaststroke. Garase, with the Warriors in fifth place, swam a 23.07, to move the team up to third before Arhontakis kept the team in third with a 21.33 split.
A pair of second place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly and breaststrokes also helped the team set new school records, as Woods took second in the butterfly with a time of 52.15 to knock down his own school record of 52.63 set at the 2012 conference championships and freshman
Trevor Endler (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) knocked down the record in the breaststroke with a time of 1:00.81 while finishing just 0.12 behind the race winner, Doug Ranson of Misericordia. Endler broke the mark of 1:00.88 set by sophomore
T.J. Guminski (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) at the 2012 championships.
Through the first two days, the men are third with 293, sitting behind just Albright (585) and Misericordia (387). The women’s team is fifth with 198 points, behind Albright (398), Widener (368), Misericordia (359), and Messiah (320).
After the record-setting relay opened the day, freshman
Josh Thomas (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) finished sixth in the 400-yard individual medley to earn Second Team All-MAC honors with a time of 4:25.45, dropping more than eight seconds off his seed time.
Garase swam with Woods in the finals of the 100-yard butterfly, posting a time of 53.27 to finish seventh.
Three Warriors swam in the finals of the 100-yard breaststroke, with Endler taking second, Guminski taking fifth to earn Second Team All-MAC honors at 1:02.38 and Oropollo finishing eighth at 1:03.99.
Woods also swam for the Warriors in the 100-yard backstroke, taking seventh with a time of 55.43, dropping his seed time by more than a second.
Also earning points for the Warriors, freshman
Zac Kibler (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) finished 11
th in the 400-yard individual medley (4:36.58) and 13
th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.88). Freshman
Alex Anderson (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) took 12
th in the 400-yard individual medley (4:37.53), freshman
Dan Apostolu (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) took 12
th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.10) and junior
Zack Brower (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) took 13
th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.28). Guminski also took 14
th in the 100-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 59.24.
The team also earned Second Team All-MAC honors by taking sixth in the 800-yard freestyle relay, with the team of Garase, Brower, Apostolu and Thomas notching a time of 7:27.49 to cap the night.
On the women’s side, the team had a pair of individual all-conference honorees in freshman
Jilly Flynn (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and sophomore
Danielle Loiseau (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield).
Loiseau took fifth in the 100-yard butterfly, posting a season-best time of 1:00.16, to earn Second Team All-MAC honors and Flynn took sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a season-best 1:09.45 to also take second team honors.
The 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore
BethAnnSchwoyer (Williamsport, Pa./Homeschooled), Flynn, Loiseau, and sophomore
Brigid Clark (Wyndmoor, Pa./Springfield) also earned Second Team All-MAC honors with a fifth-place finish in 1:53.84.
Schwoyer also raced in the 100-yard backstroke final, taking eighth with a time of 1:02.53 after she posted a time of 1:02.34 in the preliminary race.
A pair of Warriors competed in the consolation finals of the 100-yard butterfly, with senior
Elisa Becker (Reston, Va./South Lakes) posting a season-best 1:01.94 to win the consolation race and take ninth overall. Sophomore
Lexi Follweiler (Coaldale, Pa./Panther Valley) took 10
th with a season-best time of 1:02.31.
Three Warriors raced in the consolation finals of the 100-yard backstroke, with senior
Caitlin DeAngelo (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) posting a time of 1:04.32 to take 13
th, freshman
Felicia Sloyer (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) taking 14
th with a time of 1:04.33 and Clark taking 15
th with a time of 1:04.42.
Freshman
Cathrin Manning (York, Pa./York Suburban) took 15
th in the 400-yard individual medley, dropping her seed time by 12.65 seconds and finishing in 5:17.90.
The Warriors wrap up the MAC Championships on Sunday, Feb. 10, with the preliminaries at 9 a.m. The finals will begin at 5 p.m.
