WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Lycoming College men’s and women’s swim teams wrapped up the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships by breaking four more school records on Sunday, Feb. 10, bringing the total for the three-day event to nine, as the men tied the school record for best finish at the event, taking third, and the women finished fifth.
Albright, for the second straight year, won both the men’s and women’s titles. On the men’s side, Albright finished with 858 points, Misericordia took second with 584.5 before Lycoming came in with 415 points to beat out Widener (327). On the women’s side, the Lions posted 618 points to edge out Widener (545). Misericordia and Messiah followed before Lycoming, which posted 302 points.
During the third day, the Warriors posted four school records, with sophomore
Danielle Loiseau (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) breaking a 30-year-old mark in the 200-yard butterfly, freshman
Trevor Endler (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) breaking a mark in the 200-yard breaststroke, freshman
Josh Thomas (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) becoming the first swimmer in school history to cross 2:00 in the 200-yard butterfly and the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay capping the meet with a record-breaking performance.
Loiseau broke her mark en route to a fourth-place finish and Second Team All-MAC honors, notching the record-breaking time of 2:13.18 during the preliminaries before swimming a 2:13.85 in the finals. She knocked down the record of 2:14.66 set by All-American Denise Zimmerman during the 1982 season.
Endler posted his record-breaking performance by taking second in his race, notching a time of 2:13.83, breaking the mark of 2:15.15 set by Joe Andrie at the 2011 MAC Championships, helping him pick up his second First Team All-MAC honors of the championships.
Thomas smashed the record set by Jeff Swatkins of 2:01.63 in 2006 in the 200-yard butterfly while swimming to a third-place finish to earn First Team All-MAC honors, posting a time of 1:58.86 in the finals.
The men’s team capped the meet with a fourth-place finish in the 4x100-yard relay, as the team of senior
Nate Oropollo (Aldan, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara), junior
Zack Brower (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North), sophomore
Daniel Woods (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) and freshman
Kyle Garase (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) notched a time of 3:14.65, breaking the mark of 3:15.53 set during the 2004 championships.
Sophomore
BethAnn Schwoyer (Williamsport, Pa./Homeschooled) also picked up Second Team All-MAC honors in the 200-yard backstroke, posting a time of 2:15.39.
Freshman
Jilly Flynn (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) also competed in the finals of the 200-yard breaststroke, posting a time of 2:33.19 to take seventh. Sophomore
Lexi Follweiler (Coaldale, Pa./Panther Valley) posted a season-best time of 2:19.58 to take seventh in the 200-yard butterfly.
Also scoring points for the women were junior
Jennie Marosits (Mt. Lakes, N.J./Mt. Lakes), who posted a 12
th-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle at 19:17.15, and freshman
Hannah Bischoff (Germantown, Md./Northeast), who took 15
th with a time of 19:28.63.
In the consolation finals of the 200-yard backstroke, freshman
Felicia Sloyer (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) finished 13
th with a time of 2:18.72, Marosits took 14
th with a time of 2:19.19 and senior
Caitlin DeAngelo (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) took 16
th with a time of 2:24.14.
In the 100-yard freestyle, senior
Elisa Becker (Reston, Va./South Lakes) posted a season-best time of 57.34 to take 15
th. Freshman
Cathrin Manning (York, Pa./York Suburban) took 14
th in the 200-yard breaststroke, posting a time of 2:42.60 after notching a season-best time of 2:41.64 and senior
Hope Weber (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) took 13
th in the 200-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 2:28.50.
The women capped the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the team of Loiseau, sophomore
Brigid Clark (Wyndmoor, Pa./Springfield), Follweiler and Becker finished in 3:46.60 to earn Second Team All-MAC honors.
On the men’s side, the team reeled in another all-conference award, as sophomore
T.J. Guminski (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) took sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:16.80 to earn second-team honors.
Freshman
Zac Kibler (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) finished seventh in the breaststroke, posting a season-best time of 2:21.68.
Garase took sixth in the 100-yard freestyle to earn his second Second Team All-MAC honors of the championships, finishing in a season-best 48.92.
Also scoring points for the men, junior
Jack Port (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) finished 16
th in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:20.68 and he took 12
th in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.48.
Oropollo took 13
th in the 100-yard freestyle, posting a time of 49.35 and Brower was right behind him with a time of 49.73 to take 16
th.
Junior
Peter Fields (Burke, Va./Robinson) took 13
th in the 200-yard breaststroke, notching a season-best time of 2:25.73 and freshman
Alex Anderson (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) took 11
th in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:09.38.
The Warrior men finished 8-1 overall and 8-1 in the conference, finishing the dual meet season with its best record since the 1964-65 team finished 11-1, coincidentally the last time the team has won more than eight meets in a row – as that squad posted a school-record 11 dual meet wins in a row.
The Warrior women closed out the season with a 7-3 overall mark and a 6-3 mark in the MAC, its 12th straight winning season.
