WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Lycoming College head swimming coach
Jerry Hammaker broke the last coaching record at the school that wasn’t his, winning his 82
nd dual meet with the men’s program to break Mort Rauff’s 40-year old mark, as the Warriors swept its season-ending Middle Atlantic Conference meet against Arcadia on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Lamade Gym Natatorium. The men posted a 137-78 win and the women notched a 135-81 victory.
The Warrior men improved to 8-1 overall and 8-1 in the conference, finishing the dual meet season with its best record since the 1964-65 team finished 11-1, coincidentally the last time the team has won more than eight meets in a row – as that squad posted a school-record 11 dual meet wins in a row.
Hammaker, who is wrapping up his 12
th year at Lycoming, improved to 82-36 (.695) all-time with the men’s program, moving past Rauff, who went 81-69-2 (.529) with the program from 1960-73. Hammaker is also the women’s program’s all-time wins leader, as he has an 87-33-1 (.723) all-time record.
The men’s team posted wins in 10 of the meet’s 14 events and finished 1-2 in seven events to cruise to the 137-78 win.
Freshman
Kyle Garase (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) and junior
Jack Port (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) led the Warriors with two wins a piece. Garase notched a time of 1:53.18 to take the 200-yard freestyle and also notched a 54.44 to win the 100-yard butterfly. Port notched times of 2:14.55 to win the 200-yard butterfly and 2:15.96 to win the 200-yard backstroke.
Other individual wins came from freshman
Josh Thomas (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran), who won the 100-yard backstroke (59.70), sophomore
Daniel Woods (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North), who took the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.08), senior
Nate Oropollo (Aldan, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara), who took the 50-yard freestyle (22.60) and junior
Peter Fields (Burke, Va./Robinson), who won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.09).
Lycoming also swept the relays, with the team of Woods, freshman
Dan Apostolu (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), Thomas and Oropollo posting a time of 1:43.92 in the 200-yard medley relay and the team of sophomore
Kyle Petchock (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery), junior
C.J. Arhontakis (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove), Woods and Garase notching a time of 1:33.91 to win the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Arcadia’s men fell to 0-8-1 overall and 0-6-1 in the MAC.
On the women’s side, the team won its fourth straight dual meet to close out the season with a 7-3 overall record and a 6-3 mark in the MAC, led by two wins each from sophomores
BethAnn Schwoyer (Williamsport, Pa./Homeschooled),
Danielle Loiseau (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and
Lexi Follweiler (Coaldale, Pa./Panther Valley).
Arcadia fell to 2-8 overall and 0-7 in the MAC.
Schwoyer won both backstrokes, posting a time of 1:02.90 to take the 100 and 2:16.15 to take the 200. Loiseau posted wins in the 200-yard butterfly, notching a time of 2:23.28, and 500-yard freestyle with at time of 5:39.25 and Follweiler won the 100-yard freestyle (59.20) and 100-yard butterfly (1:05.70).
The Warriors also got individual wins from freshman
Cathrin Manning (York, Pa./York Suburban), who posted a time of 1:18.33 to win the 100-yard breaststroke, senior
Elisa Becker (Reston, Va./South Lakes), who notched a time of 27.50 to win the 50-yard freestyle, freshman
Jilly Flynn (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), who posted a time of 2:47.92 to win the 200-yard breaststroke and junior
Jennie Marosits (Mt. Lakes, N.J./Mt. Lakes) added a time of 5:24.29 to win the 400-yard individual medley.
Lycoming also swept the relays, with the team of Schwoyer, Flynn, Follweiler and Becker posting a time of 1:59.86 to take the 200-yard medley relay and the team of Loiseau, freshman
Felicia Sloyer (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), sophomore
Brigid Clark (Wyndmoor, Pa./Springfield) and Schwoyer took the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:47.50.
During the meet’s second intermissions, Lycoming honored the six swimming seniors:

Caitlin DeAngelo (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg),
Lindsey Hunsicker (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and
Hope Weber (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) from the women’s team and
Jehiel Boner (Springville, Pa./Elk Lake) and
Oropollo from the men’s team.
The Warriors will now have three weeks to prepare before starting the three-day Middle Atlantic Conference Championships at the Wilkes-Barre Catholic Youth Center. The event begins on Friday, Feb. 8 at 12 p.m.
