Cody Moyer (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton Area),
Parker Showers (Aspers, Pa./Biglerville) and
Nate Oropollo (Aldan, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) took home the Lycoming College football team’s highest honors during the 34th annual football awards banquet held at the Genetti Hotel on Saturday, Jan. 12.
The team’s highest honor, the Leland “Lee” Calistri ’59 Award, was given to offensive lineman Moyer. This award is presented annually to a senior, who, during his four-year career at Lycoming, placed the team’s success above his own. This player displays courage, the desire to be the best he can be and a willingness to sacrifice any individual goals for the well-being of the team. Moyer, a four-year starter, wrapped up his career by becoming the first Warrior offensive lineman to earn back-to-back first-team all-region honors from d3Football.com, as he repeated as a third team selection. Moyer, who was named to an Honorable Mention D3Senior Classic Preseason All-American and the
USA Football News Preseason Northeast Region Team, helped the Warriors average 342.1 yards of total offense, including 175.6 on the ground. Moyer was also named the team’s Offensive Lineman of the Year, an award he also earned in 2009 as a freshman.
The David G. Busey Award for academic and athletic achievement was presented to running back Showers, who was also named one of the team’s MVPs, an award he shared with Oropollo.
Showers, who was also named the team’s Special Teams Player of the Year, continued a string of six straight All-MAC nods for Warrior running backs, as Josh Kleinfelter ’11 earned four straight nods and Showers was a second-team pick in 2011. The fast, powerful back moved all the way from sixth to fourth in the MAC after notching a career-high 188 rushing yards against Misericordia in the season finale. The team captain finished the season with 76.50 yards per game and added eight touchdowns, helping him gain 1,977 career yards on 438 carries, finishing ninth in school history in both rushing yards and with 18 rushing touchdowns.
As a special teams player, Showers also earned second team honors. One of the most explosive kick returners in the country, Showers finished 14
th in the nation at 26.82 yards per return. He set the school’s kickoff career return yardage in the game against Lebanon Valley, earning him MAC Special Teams Player of the Week. He finished the season with 456 yards on just 17 returns, six yards from the school’s single season record, and he posted three 40-yard returns on the season.
Oropollo, who in addition to being named the team’s Most Valuable Player, was also named one of the team’s Defensive Lineman of the Year. Oropollo was also named Second Team All-East Region by D3football.com thanks to his relentless work as a defensive end this season. The team captain led the MAC with 10.0 sacks and finished second with 16.0 tackles for loss, helping him earn First Team All-MAC honors. The Cardinal O’Hara graduate had a breakthrough day in an upset win over Delaware Valley, posting four sacks to help him earn MAC Defensive Player of the Week and D3football.com Team of the Week honors. He also posted six tackles and two sacks to earn MAC Defensive Player of the Week honors against FDU-Florham.
Senior
Jarrin Campman (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Year. One of the most athletic players for the Warriors, Campman had a breakthrough season, developing into the team’s top receiver. A converted quarterback, Campman finished sixth in the league with 4.3 receptions per game and seventh at 56.10 yards per game. The Clearfield Area grad had a nose for the end zone, finishing third in the league with 11 receiving touchdowns, which were also the fourth-most in school history.
Junior
Kabongo Bukasa (Sharon Hill, Pa./Academy Park) was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year. Bukasa, the MAC Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-MAC selection, led the Warriors and finished seventh in the league with 7.8 tackles and 0.33 interceptions per game, the only player in the top 10 in both categories. Leading the team with 70 tackles, Bukasa had five or more tackles in each of his first eight games. Versatile and fast, Bukasa has the ability to make plays behind the line of scrimmage and 10-yards downfield. He also performed in big games, posting two interceptions and a fumble recovery against nationally-ranked Widener, helping him earn the MAC Defensive Player of the Week award. The Congo native was also named Second Team All-East Region by D3football.com and a Second Team Beyond College Sports Network All-American.
Junior
Dwight Hentz (Halifax, Pa./Halifax Area) shared the team’s Defensive Lineman of the Year award with Oropollo. Hentz had a monster year en route to earning second-team all-region and All-MAC accolades. The powerful defensive tackle finished second in the MAC in sacks, posting seven, and tied for third in tackles for loss at 1.3 per game, earning him second team all-conference honors. He finished third on the team with 53 tackles and also forced a fumble. Hentz was also named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week after posting 10 tackles, 2.0 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss against King’s.
Sophomores
Tyler Jenny and
Garrett Hartman earned the team’s Most Improved Offensive Player award.
Jenny finished the season third in the MAC in pass efficiency at 136.04 and fourth in total offense (179.6) He was 150-of-248 (60.5 percent) for 1,658 yards and 17 touchdowns while being intercepted just four times. He also completed 60 percent of his passes in a school-record seven straight games, helping him earn honorable mention all-conference honors.
Hartman earned second team all-conference honors, as the offensive tackle anchored the right side of the Warriors’ line all season. Starting all 10 games, Hartman helped the Warriors rush for more than 100 yards in each of the nine MAC games and posted more than 300 yards of total offense in eight straight games.
Both sophomore
Tanner Troutman (Hegins, Pa./Tri-Valley) and senior
Caleb Shertzer (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) earned the team’s Most Improved Defensive Player award.
Stepping into the starting lineup in the second week and immediately helping the Warriors to an upset win over nationally-ranked Delaware Valley, Troutman earned his third-team all-region honors after taking second-team all-conference accolades. He finished second in the league with five interceptions and finished the regular season with the league lead with 11 passes defended. In his first start against the Aggies, Troutman posted an interception and two breakups. He also had 10 tackles and two interceptions against nationally-ranked Widener.
Shertzer stepped into the starting lineup midway through the Warriors’ second game against Delaware Valley and responded admirably well, as the converted running back earned his honorable mention all-conference honors. Shertzer finished the season with 41 tackles, tied for fourth on the team, an interception and four pass breakups.
The Warriors finished 8-2 overall and 8-1 in the MAC to finish second in the league under fifth-year head coach
