Rookies shine on day two at MACs

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Three Lycoming College freshmen swimmers, Dan Woods (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North), T.J. Guminski (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and BethAnn Schwoyer (Williamsport, Pa./Homeschooled) set school records to lead the team during the second day of the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships at the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center on Saturday, Feb. 11.
                                   
The men’s team leapfrogged Messiah into fourth place in the league standings, 43 points third-place Widener, while Messiah is close behind at 238.5. Albright leads the men’s championships with a score of 543.
 
On the women’s side, the Warriors remain in fifth at 211. Albright leads the championships with 423 points.
 
Woods was the first to break a school-record, as he finished second in the 100-yard butterfly, posting a time of 52.63 to earn First Team All-MAC honors. In the process, Woods broke his own school-record twice during the day, moving past his mark of 53.29 by posting a 53.28 in the preliminary round before shattering the mark by more than half a second in the finals.
 
In the 100-yard breaststroke showdown that featured Guminski and senior Joe Andrie (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) in the finals, Guminski finished second to earn First Team All-MAC honors, notching his school-record 1:00.88 to finish just behind Misericordia’s Doug Ranson, who won the title with a time of 59.48. Andrie, who set the school-record at 1:01.54 as a junior at the MAC Championships, was close behind, finishing fourth to earn Second Team All-MAC honors, as he posted a time of 1:01.98.
 
Schwoyer rounded out the school-record breakers for the Warriors, as she finished the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.61, edging out the school record of 1:01.67 set by Kelly Sykes in 2006. In the process, she finished in fifth to earn Second Team All-MAC honors.
 
Guminski picked up his first career individual All-MAC honors when he earned second-team all-conference accolades by dropping 10 seconds off his career best entering the tournament to take fifth in the 400-yard individual medley at 4:24.28.
 
Two others scored points for the Warriors in the 400-yard individual medley, as sophomore Peter Fields (Burke, Va./Robinson) posted an eighth-place finish with 4:39.18, as he dropped three seconds off his season-best and senior Myles Biggs (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) took 10th with a time of 4:39.51, dropping his seed time by more than 10 seconds.
 
Sohomore Zach Brower (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) dropped his preliminary time by almost four seconds as he took ninth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.48, as he won the consolation final. Senior Derek Lupia (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) took 16th with a time of 1:56.58 in the consolation finals. His time of 1:55.36 in the preliminaries dropped his seed time by 1.81 seconds.
 
Sophomore Jake Pelinsky (Southwick, Mass./Westfield) also scored for Lycoming in the 100-yard breaststroke, as he took 13th with a time of 1:04.69, as he dropped his seed time by nearly a second.
 
Woods won the consolation final of the 100-yard backstroke, finishing ninth with a time of 56.77.
 
In the relays, the 200-yard medley squad of Woods, Andrie, Guminski and sophomore C.J. Arhontakis (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) notched a season-best time of 1:39.24 to pick up First Team All-MAC honors by placing third. The 800-yard freestyle relay team of Brower, Lupia, Biggs and Guminski took sixth to earn Second Team All-MAC honors with a time of 7:38.37.
 
Freshman Brigid Clark (Springfield, Pa./Wyndmoor) also had an impressive performance for the Warriors, as she notched a time of 2:00.29 to take fifth and earn Second Team All-MAC honors in the 200-yard freestyle. It was the highest that a Warrior had finished in the 200-yard freestyle at the championships since Rebecca Fox took fourth in 2003.
 
Junior Lindsey Hunsicker (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) led a contingent of five Warriors in the finals of the 100-yard butterfly, as she earned Second Team All-MAC honors, the third All-MAC honors of her career in the event, with a time of 1:01.62 to take sixth, as she dropped her seed time by three and a half seconds.
 
Freshman Danielle Loiseau (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) took seventh with a time of 1:01.92 and freshman Lexi Follweiler (Coaldale, Pa./Panther Valley) finished 11th with a season-best time of 1:02.88. Junior Elisa Becker (Reston, Va./South Lakes) took 15th with a season-best time of 1:03.78 and junior Hope Weber (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) took 16th with a time of 1:04.34.
 
Junior Caitlin DeAngelo (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) also posted a time of 1:02.62 to finish seventh in the 100-yard backstroke.
 
In the relays, the 200-yard medley team of Schwoyer, Loiseau, Hunsicker and DeAngelo earned Second Team All-MAC honors by taking sixth with a time of 1:56.98. In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the team of Clark, Schwoyer, Follweiler and Loiseau earned Second Team All-MAC honors, finishing fifth with a time of 8:20.16.
