Warrior men soar as swim teams split with Falcons

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Kyle Garase (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) kept up his torrid pace, winning all three of his individual races to help lead the Lycoming College men’s swim team to a 155-105 win over Messiah College in Middle Atlantic Conference action at Lamade Gym Natatorium on Saturday, Dec. 8. In women’s swimming, the Falcons were able to win 11 of the 14 races to take a 156.5-103.5 decision.
 
The Lycoming men’s team (4-1 overall, 4-1 MAC) got off to a solid start in the 200-yard medley relaym as the team of sophomore Daniel Woods (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North), sophomore T.J. Guminski (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), Garase and senior Nate Oropollo (Aldan, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) posted a time of 1:40.15 to win by 2.5 seconds.
 
After a win by Messiah (4-4 overall, 4-2 MAC) in the 1,000-yard freestyle, Garase won his first of three races, taking the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.03, the MAC’s fourth-fastest time this year in his first attempt at the event. He went on to add wins in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.73 and 200-yard individual medley, finishing in 2:02.34, coming within 0.73 seconds the school-record set by Jeff Swatkins in 2005.
 
Woods also added a pair of wins, taking the 100-yard backstroke in 58.80 and 100-yard butterfly in 54.31.
 
In the 200-yard butterfly, freshman Josh Thomas (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) posted a winning time of 2:01.85, just 0.22 seconds off the school record held by Swatkins. Thomas also took second in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:09.14 and the 100-yard butterfly in 55.18. The Warriors went 1-2-3 in the 100-yard butterfly, with freshman Alexander Anderson (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) taking third at 59.40.
 
Oropollo also had a solid performance, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 22.20 and anchoring both relay winners. The Warriors capped the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the team of junior Zack Brower (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North), freshman Trevor Endler (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick), freshman Dan Apostolu (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) and Oropollo posted a time of 3:25.21.
 
On the women’s side, the Warriors (3-3 overall, 2-3 MAC) were led by sophomores BethAnn Schwoyer (Williamsport, Pa./Homeschooled) and Danielle Loiseau (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and freshman Jilly Flynn (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), who each won a race.
 
Schwoyer posted a time of 1:03.35 to win the 100-yard backstroke and she also finished second in the 200-yard version of the event in 2:17.55.
 
Loiseau posted a time of 1:02.70 to win the 100-yard butterfly and also took second in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:19.20.
 
Flynn nearly came up with two event wins, taking the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.89 and just getting touched out in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:38.00, just 0.39 behind Messiah’s Anna McArdle.
 
The Warriors get back in the pool on Saturday, Jan. 12, when they head to Lebanon Valley for a 1 p.m. Middle Atlantic Conference dual meet.
