WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Making up a 17-point deficit in its final two events, the Lycoming College men’s swimming team clinched a 105-100 win over Misericordia University, its first against the Cougars in five years, by picking up 13 points in the 200-yard freestyle relay to cap the Middle Atlantic Conference dual meet on Wednesday night, Nov. 14. On the women’s side, Misericordia edged out the Warriors, 109-96.

Down 93-76 after the second break, the Warrior men staged a dramatic comeback, spearheaded by a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100-yard breaststroke. Sophomore T.J. Guminski (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) led the charge with a time of 1:04.50 and freshman Trevor Endler (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) (1:05.96) and junior Jake Pelinsky (Southwick, Mass./Westfield) (1:06.78) were right behind, with both finishing nearly two seconds ahead of the nearest Misericordia (2-3 overall, 1-1 MAC) swimmer, closing the scoring gap to 96-92 heading into the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The Warriors (3-1 overall, 3-1 MAC) didn’t disappoint the home crowd in the final race, with the team of freshman Kyle Garase (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold), freshman Dan Apostolu (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), sophomore Daniel Woods (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) and junior Zack Brower (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) pulling away with a time of 1:30.18, beating the Misericordia ‘A’ team by nearly two seconds to clinch the meet with the 11-point victory.

Misericordia started the meet out hot, winning the first three meets, but the Warriors responded with four straight wins to get back in the meet, led by Garase, who posted a time of 22.54 to take the 50-yard freestyle. Guminski followed with a win in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:07.00 before the first break. Garase notched a time of 53:58 in the 100-yard butterfly and, after being edged out in the 200-yard freestyle, Brower blew away the field in the 100-yard freestyle, posting a time of 50.03, dropping eight-tenths of his seed time and winning by 1.40 seconds.

The Cougars won the next two events, though, heading into the second break and setting up the dramatic finish.

On the women’s side, the Warriors posted a win in both relays, but Misericordia posted seven individual wins to edge out the win, 109-96. Misericordia improved to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the MAC and Lycoming fell to 2-2 overall and 2-2 in the MAC.
