MADISON, N.J. – With more than 200 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns, senior
Jarrin Campman (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) led the Lycoming College football team to its fifth straight win, a 42-7 rout of FDU-Florham at Robert T. Shields Field in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Saturday, Oct. 6.
The Warriors (5-1 overall, 5-0 MAC) will take off next week before getting back on the field on Saturday, Oct. 20 in a showdown with the MAC’s other undefeated team, 17
th-ranked Widener (6-0 overall, 5-0 MAC), on Homecoming at David Person Field. Kick-off is set for 1:30 p.m. in one of the biggest showdowns for the Warriors in the past decade.
Campman seemed to run all over the field on Saturday, making six receptions for 73 yards, scoring on a 10-yard first quarter reception, signifying his fifth straight game with a touchdown catch, and a 34-yard fly pattern in the third quarter, but it was his breakthrough performance as a punt returner that may have been most special. He averaged 45.3 yards on three punt returns, scoring on his final one with a 59-yard sprint.
Sophomore quarterback
Tyler Jenny (Coalport, Pa./Glendale) passed better than 60 percent for a school-record fifth straight game, completing 17-of-26 (65 percent) for 194 yards and a career-high four touchdowns.
After both teams traded punts to open the game, sophomore
Kody Flail (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) gave the offense good field position with an interception that helped Lycoming start the next drive at the 32-yard line. After a pair of runs helped Lycoming pick up a first down, Jenny found junior
Greg Kovacs (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) over the middle for a short game and then fired a 13-yard touchdown pass off a screen to sophomore fullback
Nick Mongiello (East Windsor, N.J./Hightstown), with Mongiello gaining eight yards after the catch and bulldozing into the endzone.
An interception by senior
Matt Talerico (Moosic, Pa./Riverside) got Lycoming moving on its next drive, intercepting the ball on fourth down and getting the ball back to the Lycoming 29-yard line. The Warriors converted four third-down plays, including huge completions to running backs sophomore
Craig Needhammer (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and senior
Parker Showers (Aspers, Pa./Biglerville), who raced the ball down the sideline to the 10-yard line, setting up a touchdown strike from Jenny to Campman.
Lycoming got a big defensive play in the secondary again on the next play, as Craig Kimbrough broke free into the secondary for FDU-Florham (1-4 overall, 1-3 MAC), but junior
Tyler Denike (South Boardman, Mich./Forest Area) came from behind and knocked the ball into Talerico’s waiting arms at the Lycoming 27-yard line, helping keep the Devils scoreless at the end of the first quarter. Capping off the quarter, junior punter
Zack Czap (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Oscelola) launched the first 70-yard punt for the team since Tom Ralicke posted a record 79-yard punt against Susquehanna in 1996.
In the second quarter, Campman got the Warriors going with a 31-yard punt return to the 23-yard line and just four plays later, Jenny scored on a 1-yard sneak, giving Lycoming a 21-0 lead. With 3:10 remaining in the half, the Warriors had another scoring drive when Campman used a 46-yard punt return to give Lycoming the ball at the Devils’ 29-yard line. Five plays later, Jenny found freshman
Ryan Umpleby (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) over the middle for an eight-yard touchdown to give Lycoming a 28-0 lead at the break.
At the break, Lycoming had held the Devils to just 94 totall yards, including 20 passing while rolling up 235 yards of offense, posting 143 through the air and 92 on the ground.
In the second half, the Warriors saw their first drive fall scoreless, but on their second, Jenny found Campman for a 34-yard touchdown strike on a fly pattern on first-and-16 to cap an eight-play, 64-yard drive.
FDU-Florham cracked the scoreboard with a 13-play, 83-yard drive, scoring on a 2-yard diving catch by Edwin Lara from Mike Santos with 39 seconds left in the third quarter. The Devils converted an on-side kick and began the fourth quarter with the ball, but a fourth-and-1 tackle by Flail and junior
Kabongo Bukasa (Sharon Hill, Pa./Academy Park) ended the drive.
Campman struck with his 59 yard punt return to the house with 5:00 left in the fourth to round out the scoring.
The Warriors held FDU-Florham to just 207 total offensive yards while gaining 364 yards and adding 178 more yards on four punt returns.
Showers finished with 91 yards on the ground on 13 carries, caught a pass for 25 yards and had two kick returns for 59 yards to give him his fifth game of the year with more than 100 all-purpose yards. Needhammer added 51 yards on 14 carries, also adding two catches for 22 yards. Mongiello caught three passes for 26 yards and a score.
Kimbrough led the Devils with eight carries for 46 yards and Mike Santos ran nine times for 30 yards. Santos completed 17-of-36 passing for 112 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted and sacked twice each. Anthony Fruncillo caught seven passes for 53 yards.
Bukasa finished with a team-high 11 tackles, one for a loss for the Warriors and senior
Nate Oropollo (Aldan, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) had another fine game for the Warriors, making six stops, three for loss and added two sacks, giving him a league-leading eight on the season. Sophomore
Jimmy Nottingham (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown), making his first career start, posted six tackles and 1.5 for loss. Flail notched five stops, an interception and a breakup. Denike also added six tackles and a forced fumble.
Mike Mancino led the Devils with 12 tackles, one for loss and Troy Scales notched 10 tackles and a fumble recovery. Nick Fano had three stops, a sack and a forced fumble.
