Warriors rout Wilkes, 38-7

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – With their most complete effort of the season, the Lycoming College football team posted 438 yards of total offense and allowed just 158 to shut down one of the best rushing offenses in the country in Wilkes and roll to a 38-7 Middle Atlantic Conference win at Schmidt Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Lycoming (6-2 overall, 6-1 MAC) was led by a great effort defensively that allowed just two completed passes during the game and an average of just 3.1 yards on 42 rushing attempts. Junior Dwight Hentz (Halifax, Pa./Halifax Area) led the team with two sacks and three tackles for loss while making six tackles, leading a defensive line that contributed four of the team’s five sacks. The Warriors also notched 11 tackles for a loss, as Lycoming won at Wilkes (4-4 overall, 3-4 MAC) for the first time since 2003.

The Warriors got on the board with a 99-yard drive on their second possession of the first quarter. After moving to the Lycoming 36 with a pair of first down passes, Jenny loaded up and threw a deep out to sophomore John Sibel (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsbury) and Sibel leapt up for a 41-yard gain. Four plays later, Jenny plowed in from one yard out for the touchdown.

Wilkes got on the board thanks to a Warrior turnover deep in Lycoming territory and took the ball 32 yards on five plays before Patrick Ingulli rushed four years into the endzone after a 19-yard rush on  4-and-1 by quarterback Tyler Berntsen.

The Warriors took control from there, though, with another efficient 11-play, 68-yard drive, capping it when Jenny found senior Jarrin Campman (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) on the right side and Campman tip-toed down the sideline for a 26-yard score with 6:53 left in the second quarter.

After a three-and-out by Wilkes, the Warriors got a 32-yard punt return by Campman that was shortened due to a penalty, but still had decent field position, getting the ball at the Lycoming 49-yard line. Sibel caught a first down pass and a late hit moved the ball to the 23 and forced Sibel off the field. After a one-yard rush, Jenny found the reinstalled Sibel, who outleaped a Wilkes defender in the end zone for a 24-yard score, making it 21-7 at halftime.

Lycoming continued to roll after the break, allowing Wilkes just two first downs in the second half, while rolling up 14. On Lycoming’s first possession of the second half, the team drove 77 yards on eight plays, scoring on a 25-yard fly from Jenny to Campman.

After a 3-and-out, the Warriors drove 33 yards on nine plays, setting up a 37-yard field goal by junior Zack Czap (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) to make it 31-7, where it stayed until a nine-play, 58-yard drive that was capped on a 14-yard touchdown rush from sophomore Craig Needhammer (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) rounded out the scoring with 7:08 left in the fourth quarter.

Jenny finished 17-of-26 with three touchdowns while throwing for a career-high 239 yards. Sibel caught four passes for a career-high 81 yards and a touchdown and Campman finished with four catches, 66 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 57 yards on punt returns to finish with 123 all-purpose yards. Sophomore Nick Mongiello (East Windsor, N.J./Hightstown) caught three passes for 32 yards.

The Warriors also rushed the ball 48 times for 199 yards, led by Needhammer, who had 78 yards on 21 carries, scoring once. Senior Parker Showers (Aspers, Pa./Biglerville) ran 13 times for 69 yards.

Junior Kabongo Bukasa (Sharon Hill, Pa./Academy Park) made eight tackles and had a sack and junior Tyler Denike (South Boardman, Mich./Forest Area) added six tackles, three for a loss. Senior Nate Oropollo (Aldan, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) added two tackles for loss and a sack and sophomore Braden Zeiner (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall-Coplay) added a sack.

Bertnsen ran 17 times for 66 yards to lead the Colonels, but completed just 2-of-16 passes for 27 yards. Ingulli added 18 carries for 47 yards and a touchdown.

D.J. Shuttleworth and Tate Moore-Jacobs posted 12 tackles each for Wilkes and Michael Paskas added six stops and one fumble recovery.
