GRANTHAM, Pa. – With five career-bests despite a muddy course, the Lycoming College cross country teams had a successful day at the Messiah College Invitational on Saturday morning, Sept. 24, with freshman Alanna Cimerol (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) posting a career-best 27:22.10 to take 27th-place for the women’s team to complement junior Michelle Herman (Altoona, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area), who took 14th with a time of 26:23.40 to lead the team.
The duo helped pace the women to a ninth-place finish in the 13th-place field in a preview meet of the MAC Championships, which will also be at Messiah on Oct. 29. The Warriors finished ahead of conference foes Albright and Alvernia while Messiah took the team title.
The women’s squad also got a pair of other career-bests, as freshman Tiffany Casulli (Port Jervis, N.Y./Port Jervis) posted a career-best 32:17.70 and sophomore Carmen Niemeyer (Brookings, S.D./Brookings) added a time of 32:21.70 to set a career-best. Sophomore Kerri Kearney (Gardners, Pa./Bermudian Springs) notched a time of 37:13.20, setting a new season-best as she works to come back from a leg injury.
On the men’s side, the team was led by a career-best 30:59.00 by freshman Alex Bottorff (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), who took 34th in a field of 114 runners to lead the Warriors to an eighth-place finish in a 12-team field. Messiah took the team title, finishing 1-5 at the meet.
Freshman Rory McAtee (Easton, Pa./Wilson Area) came in 44th with a time of 31:23.20 and sophomore Mike Puchalski (Redlands, Pa./Redlands East Valley) was close behind, finishing in 31:50.30. Freshman Gerhardt Gerckens (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) took 64th with a time of 32:27.00 and senior Robert Wiechecki (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) rounded out the top five with a time of 33:57.20.
Junior Kevan Guerin (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) finished in 37:12.20 and freshman Chris McAtee (Easton, Pa./Wilson Area) added a 39:23.60 in his collegiate debut.
Freshman Jacob Kuppermann (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) also notched a career-best, finishing in 40:06.50.
The Warriors will next compete at the DeSales University Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 10:30 a.m. in a preview of the NCAA Division III Mideast Regionals.
