WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With three doubles wins and singles wins from the top three slots in the lineup, the Lycoming College men’s tennis team opened up its 2011-12 season with a solid 6-3 win over Goucher College on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Bruce Henry Park.

The Warriors (1-0 overall) got out to a good start against the Gophers (0-1 overall), as they swept the doubles matches, with juniors Jason Mifsud and David Brown (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) posting an 8-0 win over Austin Prince and Nick Pelensky at No. 1 doubles to start things off. At No. 2, junior Cody Heffner (Williamsport, Pa./Muncy) and freshman Sean Marshall (Waverly, N.Y./Athens Area) notched an 8-3 win over Woody Black and Daniel Csete and sophomore Chris Connolly (Montoursville, Pa./Williamsport Area) and senior David Belson (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) posted a 9-7 win over John Bescoby and Pat Murnin at No. 3 to post the sweep.

In singles play, the Warriors swept the first three flights to take the match, as Mifsud downed Prince, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1, Brown took care off Pelensky, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 and Heffner downed Csete, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3. Both Connolly and Belson also took sets during their matches at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, but fell in super-set tiebreatkers.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Sept. 24, when they face King’s on the road at 11 a.m.
