LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Sophomore David Brown (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) led the Lycoming College men’s tennis team to within a match of clinching a spot in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs, as he won 20 games and lost none to help the team to an 8-1 win over Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon,  April 9, at Bruce Henry Park.

With a 5-3 overall record and a 3-1 mark in the Commonwealth Conference, the Warriors have a magic number of two to reach the Commonwealth Conference playoffs for the second straight year, as fifth-place Lebanon Valley currently has an 0-1 conference record.

Brown teamed with brother, senior Robert Brown (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area), for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles against Jed Spangler and Nathan  Bauer. He then posted a 6-0, 6-0 win against Kevin Brandt at No. 3 singles. Robert Brown also posted two wins, notching a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 against Nathan Bauer.

At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Cody Heffner (Muncy, Pa./Muncy) and junior Devin Rachael (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Short) added an 8-0 win over Howard Kelly and Ryan Ludwig. Heffner went on to post a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kelly at No. 5 and Rachael notched  6-4, 6-2 win over Ludwig at No. 5.

At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Jason Mifsud (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) and senior Phillip Shannon (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport Area) added an 8-2 win over Brandt and Zach Marsar. Shannon posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Marsar at No. 5 singles.

The Warriors head to Messiah on Tuesday, April 12, looking to stay in contention for a home match in the Commonwealth Conference semifinals. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m.
