SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – In a rematch of the 2010 Commonwealth Conference Championship match, the Lycoming College men’s tennis team and Elizabethtown played a match that lived up to its billing as one of the biggest home matches in the 57-year history of the program. The Blue Jays eeked out a 5-4 win at the West Branch Tennis Club on Thursday, April 6, with Eric Fritzges winning the clinching point in a third-set tiebreaker.

Fritzges, after a 6-1 win in the first set at No. 3 singles, was challenged the rest of the way by sophomore David Brown (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area), as Brown tied the match with a 7-5 win a second set tiebreaker before the two found themselves locked at six in the third and final set. Fritzges posted a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker to clinch the set for the Blue Jays (6-4 overall, 2-0 Commonwealth).

Brothers senior Robert Brown and David posted an 8-6 win over Manrique Arrea and Dylan Haefner to help the Warriors (4-3 overall, 2-1 Commonwealth) score their first point after losses at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

Sophomore Cody Heffner (Muncy, Pa./Muncy) tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Haefner at No. 5 and Robert Brown gave the Warriors the lead with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win at No. 2, but the Blue Jays tied the match at three with a win at No. 4.

Sophomore Jason Mifsud (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) posted the upset of the match at No. 1 singles, as he came from behind to down the MAC Individuals First Flight Singles Champion Arrea, 0-6, 6-4, 6-2, to make it 4-3. However, the Blue Jays followed with wins at No. 6 and No. 3 to sneak away with the win.

The Warriors get back in action on Saturday, April 9, when they host Alvernia in a conference match at 1 p.m.
