Andrie sets school record and Flick wins second title to lead Warriors at MAC Championships

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. –
Junior Joe Andrie (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) broke his second school record in as many days and senior Stacy Flick (Easton, Pa./Easton  Area) won her third career Middle Atlantic Conference title and her second in as many days to lead the Lycoming College swim teams at the Catholic Youth Center on Sunday, Feb. 13. The women’s team wrapped up a fourth-place finish and the men finished fifth.

Flick, who set the school record in the 200-yard breaststroke earlier this season, won the event for the first time in her career, notching a time of 2:28.89 for her second title of the MAC Championships, as she also posted a win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.13. Flick also won the 100-yard breaststroke title as a junior and she finished the MAC Championships with three top-10 finishes, also taking ninth in the 200-yard individual medley.

On the men’s side, junior Joe Andrie (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) posted his second school-record in as many days, shattering his own record mark in the 200-yard breaststroke set as a freshman. He took fifth in the 200-yard race, posting the record time of 2:15.15, shattering the record by more than two seconds. On Saturday, Andrie posted a record-breaking performance in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing sixth with a time of 1:01.89, besting his own mark of 1:02.28 set as a freshman.

Widener took the women’s title with a score of 682 points, edging out Misericordia, which posted 671. Albright took third with 485.5 before Lycoming (408) wrapped up the top half of the standings. Messiah (280), Elizabethtown (258.5), King’s (229), Lebanon Valley (176) and Arcadia (95) wrapped up the standings.

On the men’s side, Albright nudged Widener off the podium for the first time in four years, as it posted 761 points to nudge out the Pride by 13 points. Misericordia took third with 724 points, Messiah took fourth with 241 points, nudging out Lycoming with 231 points. Elizabethtown (166), Lebanon Valley (148), Arcadia (129), King’s (96) and FDU-Florham (5) rounded out the standings.

Sophomore Lindsey Hunsicker (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) took third in the 200-yard butterfly to cap a solid MAC Championships, finishing in a time of 2:19.33. Hunsicker took second in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:01.12 and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:26.80.

Freshman Jennie Marosits (Mt. Lakes, N.J./Mt. Lakes) capped off a solid rookie meet by taking fourth for the third time in as many meets, finishing fourth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:14.84, just one second off the school-record. Marosits, who shaved six seconds off her seed time in the event, also took fourth in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 1:01.89, and the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 5:24.87.

Senior Meg Emery (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) took sixth in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in 2:17.48, after posting a seed time of 2:15.84, which set a career-best. On Saturday, Emery also took fifth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.68.

Sophomore Elisa Becker (Reston, Va./South Lakes) finished her MAC Championships by taking 11th in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 19:28.06. Sophomore Caitlin DeAngelo (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) finished 12th in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:25.57 after posting a season-best time of 2:23.61 in the preliminary race.

Freshman Ariel Smith (Hanover Township, Pa./Holy Redeemer) once again followed Flick in the breaststroke, taking 10th with a season-best time of 2:38.57 after taking fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.36 on Saturday.

Besides Andrie, several other men posted season-best performances to help the Warriors to their fifth-place finish.

Junior Myles Biggs (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) took ninth in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:12.00 for his first top-10 finish at the championships. A pair of others also earned points in the event for the Warriors, with freshman Jack Port (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) posting a time of 18:48.13 to take 12th and senior Joe Kuder (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) taking 13th with a  time of 18:51.37.

After racing in the 1,650-yard freestyle, Port came back to take 15th in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:16.10. He posted a season-best time of 2:14.77 in the preliminary round.

Freshman Jake Pelinsky (Southwick, Mass./Westfield) added a 12th-place time in the 200-yard breaststroke behind Andrie, posting a time of 2:20.27 after posting a time of 2:19.41 in the preliminary round. Sophomore Jeheil  Boner (Springville, Pa./Elk Lake) added a 16th-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly, posting a time of 2:25.66 after posting a season-best time of 2:23.38 in the prelims.

In the final relay of the night, the Warriors finished sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay, posting a time of 3:51.55 behind the team of Flick, senior Melody Johnson (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South), Emery and Becker.

The men took fourth in the relay behind the team of freshman C.J. Arhontakis (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove), freshman Zack Brower (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North), junior Derek Lupia (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) and Biggs came in with a season-best time of 3:24.33.

Flick will now wait to see if her NCAA “B” Provisional time in the 100-yard breaststroke is good enough to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be held at the University of Tennessee. The 100-yard breaststroke, which Flick swam the 17th fastest time in Division III this year heading into the weekend, will be raced on Friday, March 25, with the trials set for 10 a.m.ick
