WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Senior Stacy Flick (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) set pool and Middle Atlantic Conference Championships records with a title-worthy run in the 100-yard breaststroke to highlight the second day of the MAC Championships for the Lycoming College swim teams on Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Catholic Youth Center. The women’s team sits in fourth place and the men’s is in fifth heading into the third and final day of competition.
Flick, who set a school record with her NCAA provisional “B” cut time of 1:06.13 swam fast all day, as she set a pool record of 1:06.71 in the preliminary round before shaving half a second off in the finals to take her second straight MAC title in the 100-yard breaststroke by eight-tenths of a second over Alicia Bryk.
On the men’s side, junior Joe Andrie (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) added a school-record breaking performance in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing sixth with a time of 1:01.89, besting his own mark of 1:02.28 set as a freshman.
Misericordia leads the women’s event after 24 events with a score of 454 points, while Widener is right behind with a total of 451. Albright is third with 329.5 points, just ahead of Lycoming (285). Albright leads the men’s championship with 511 points, while Misericordia (499) and Widener (492) are right behind. Messiah (170) has edged out Lycoming (160) through two days.
Sophomore Lindsey Hunsicker (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) also added a strong performance by shaving three seconds of her season-best time to take second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.12, behind only Widener’s Laura Harris, who set a MAC record with a time of 56.96.
Freshman Jennie Marosits (Mt. Lakes, N.J./Mt. Lakes) added her second fourth-place finish in as many days, as she came within two-tenths of a second of the school-record in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 1:01.89 to take fourth. Senior Meg Emery (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) was right behind her, taking fifth with a time of 1:02.68.
Freshman Ariel Smith (Hanover Township, Pa./Holy Redeemer) followed Flick’s performance with a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.36 after posting a season-best 1:10.19 in the preliminary round. Sophomore Elisa Becker (Reston, Va./South Lakes) added a season-best time of 1:03.61 to take eighth in the 100-yard butterfly.
Sophomore Caitlin DeAngelo (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) also posted points in the 100-yard backstroke, posting a 10th-place finish with a time of 1:06.22 and senior Melody Johnson (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) notched a time of 1:08.42 to take 12th.
Sophomore Hope Weber (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) added a 12th-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 5:05.61.
Besides Andrie, several other men posted season-best performances to help keep t he Warriors in t he hunt for a top-four finish.
Andrie, before posting his school-record in the breaststroke, added an 11th-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley, posting a time of 4:36.34, nearly 10 seconds better than his previous season best. Junior Myles Biggs (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) finished right behind Andrie in 12th place, posting a time of 4:36.46 after notching a season-best time of 4:33.63 in the preliminary swim. Freshman Peter Fields (Burke, Va./Robinson) also added a 14th-place time at 4:43.48 after posting a season-best time of 4:40.29 in the preliminary round. Senior Joe Kuder (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) finished 16th with a season-best time of 4:55.83.
Freshman Jake Pelinsky (Southwick, Mass./Westfield) added a 12th-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.15 after he notched a season-best time of 1:02.95 in the prelims. Freshman Jack Port (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) added a 14th-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.78 after he notched a season-best time of 1:01.49 in the prelims.
In the relays, the team of Hunsicker, Becker, Emery and Marosits finished third in the 800-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 8:17.75 to fall just one-tenth of a second shy of the school record and fourth in the women’s 200-yard medley relay, as Marosits, Smith, Hunsicker and Flick posted a season-best time of 1:52.99.
On the men’s side, the team of freshman Zack Brower (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North), junior Derek Lupia (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg), Fields and Biggs took fifth in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a season-best time of 7:48.59. The team took sixth in the 200-yard medley relay, as the team of Port, Pelinsky, Boner and freshman C.J. Arhontakis (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) posted a time of 1:47.44.
