WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With scores on nine of its first 10 drives, the Lycoming football team’s offense rolled through a school-record of 616 yards of total offense en route to a 54-7 season-ending Middle Atlantic Conference win over FDU-Florham on a sunny Saturday, Nov. 12 at David Person Field.
“It’s sort of bittersweet,” fourth-year head coach
Mike Clark said. “We played so well both offensively and defensively, but to think it’s the end for 17 players and a very good student-assistant coach, it’s a little disappointing. I’m really proud.”
The Warriors finished 8-2 overall and 6-2 in the MAC to finish in a tie for second in the MAC with Widener, who fell to undefeated Delaware Valley, 56-28. The Warriors racked up its best season since the 2003 team finished 9-2 overall, capping it with a record-breaking Saturday, in which the team bested the previous mark of 583 yards set against FDU-Florham (then FDU-Madison) on Nov. 8, 1980.
Two running backs finished with more than 100 yards, as junior
Parker Showers (Aspers, Pa./Biglerville) ran 11 times for 125 yards and freshman
Craig Needhammer (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) carried nine times for 114 yards and a touchdown. Junior
Zach Klinger (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) completed 13-of-20 passing for 198 yards and a touchdown and then ran for a career-high three scores and 20 yards on seven carries.
“I’m proud of the way we played offensively,” Clark said. “Zach threw the ball really well. We basically did what we wanted to do. That is our best offensive game of the year.”
The Warriors drove 59 yards on eight plays to open the game, as Klinger went 3-for-4 for 36 yards on the drive and ran for 15 more yards, including a one-yard score on a sneak. After a three-and-out by the Devils (1-9 overall, 1-7 MAC), the Warriors drove 93 yards on eight plays. The drive was highlighted by a 46-yard pass out of the wildcat from sophomore
Matt Atkinson (Media, Pa./Penncrest) to sophomore
Warren Oliver (Beverly, N.J./Palmyra). Klinger capped the drive with a two-yard sneak for a score.
The Devils responded, though, with Jon Bennett streaking 61 yards up the middle of the field to make it 14-7 with 5:55 left in the quarter.
Lycoming got into field goal range on the first play after the kickoff, as Klinger found junior
Jarrin Campman (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) for a 43-yard completion, setting up a 20-yard field goal by sophomore
Zach Czap (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Oscelola).
The Warriors got the ball back with 1:30 left in the first quarter and drove 62 yards on six plays, with Klinger finding Atkinson on a 31-yard pass on third-and-11 to make it 24-7. After another FDU three-and-out, the Warriors got 32 rushing yards from Showers to set up a 36-yard field goal from Czap, for his 12
th of the season, the second-best mark in school history.
After the next three drives failed, the Warriors got the ball at their own 35-yard line and thanks to a 21-yard pass to senior
Phil Peterson (Villas, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional), the Warriors got into FDU territory before Needhammer rushed three times for 21 yards, setting up Klinger’s third touchdown on a one-yard sneak to cap the seven-play drive to make it 34-7 at halftime.
After junior
Matt Talerico (Moosic, Pa./Riverside) picked off his first career pass at the Lycoming 29-yard line, Needhammer kept the momentum going, as he rushed for 20 yards on his first play of the second half and added 41 yards for a score on his second. On the Warriors’ next drive, the Warriors drove 60 yards on five plays, with Campman picking up the second fumble in the end zone of the year for the team, as FDU knocked the ball out at the nine-yard line before it was batted into the end zone where the wide receiver fell on it.
The second of Talerico’s interceptions, this time he returned it 25 yards to the 14-yard lines, set up the Warriors’ final score, as freshman
Tyler Jenny (Flinton, Pa./Glendale) rushed in from five yards out on a quarterback sneak.
Lycoming’s defense held the Devils to 184 yards, as it allowed just 47 yards in the second half. Junior
Roger Jayne (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake Lehman) and junior
Ryan Fenningham (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) each had five tackles. Freshman
Kody Flail (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) posted four tackles, one for loss, and an interception and Talerico added his first two career pickoffs.
“I think the defense made a statement that if we aren’t the best defense in the league, we are certainly right there,” Clark said.
Atkinson posted 80 yards and a career-high six catches and Campman posted 59 yards on two receptions. Oliver added 53 yards on a pair of catches. Junior
Tyler Floyd (Halifax, Pa./Halifax Area) rushed seven times for 69 yards and sophomore

Bennett led the Devils with 61 yards on two carries and a score and Sean Norton added 15 carries for 42 yards. Ryan Cushman finished 6-of-15 for 16 yards with three interceptions. Joe Mancini and Michael Mancino led the Devils with 11 tackles, as each had a tackle for loss and Mancini had a sack.
