OWINGS MILLS, Md. – By gaining 322 yards in the first half, the Lycoming College football team rolled out to a 38-point half, scoring the first 48 points of the game en route to a 48-14 rout of Stevenson University on Saturday, Oct. 22, at Mustang Stadium in Middle Atlantic Conference action.
The win moved the Warriors into third-place in the conference with a 6-1 overall record and a 4-1 mark in the MAC. The Warriors are a half-game behind Widener, which has a 5-1 mark in the conference and a 7-1 mark overall and one game behind Delaware Valley, who is 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the MAC. The Warriors face Delaware Valley in a critical MAC showdown on Saturday, Nov. 5, at David Person Field.
Lycoming, with its sixth win of the year, has posted its second straight winning season for the first time since 2002-03. The Warriors rolled up 421 yards of total offense, but gave up a season-high 280, allowing 255 in the second half to the Mustangs (1-6 overall, 0-5 MAC).
The Warriors got out to a fast start with a 10-play, 71-yard drive for a score, as sophomore
Matt Atkinson (Media, Pa./Penncrest) scored on a 15-yard pass from junior
Zach Klinger (Halifax, Pa./Halifax Area). Junior
Parker Showers (Aspers, Pa./Biglerville) accounted for 16 yards on the ground and seven receiving during the drive.
After a kickoff return to midfield to open the Mustangs day, the Warriors quickly pushed them back to a fourth-and-32, thanks to a sack by sophomore
Dwight Hentz (Halifax, Pa./Halifax), giving the Warriors the ball back at their own 42-yard line. The offense continued to roll with a 58-yard drive, as Atkinson posted nine receiving yards and 14 rushing yards on the drive and Showers scored on a one-yard rush to make it 14-0.
After a pair of stalled drives by Stevenson and one by Lycoming, the Warriors got the ball at the 50-yard line and freshman
Craig Needhammer (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) went to work, rushing for 45 yards before scoring on four-yard run to give the Warriors a three-touchdown lead.
The Warriors’ offense kept rolling while the defense allowed just three first downs in the first half. With 5:33 left, Atkinson, running out of the option rushed for 20 yards into the end zone. At the end of the half, the Warriors got back to work with a nine-play 80-yard drive that was capped with a two-yard run by Showers with 26 seconds left in the quarter.
After a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, the Warriors added another three points as time expired on the half with a career-long 45-yard field goal by sophomore

In the second half, the Warriors started got started with a pair of interceptions, one by senior
Ray Bierbach (Hunlock Creek, Pa./Northwest Area) that led to a field goal from Czap, and one from junior
Ryan Fenningham (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) that led to a 15-yard scoring strike from freshman
Tyler Jenny (Flinton, Pa./Glendale) to sophomore
Warren Oliver (Beverly, N.J./Palmyra), giving the Warriors a 48-0 lead.
The Mustangs drove 63 yards on six plays to start the fourth quarter, with a six-yard touchdown pass from Bucknell University transfer C.J. Hopson to Anthony Reid making it 48-7. The Mustangs tacked on another score with 5:38 left, scoring on a 22-yard pass by Hopson to Max Wilson.
Klinger finished 11-of-21 for 112 yards and a touchdown. He gave up his first interception of the year. Oliver posted four receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown.
The rushing attack was led by Needhammer, who had 93 yards on 18 attempts, scoring once, and Showers added 92 yards on 15 carries, scoring twice.

Kabongo Bukasa (Sharon Hill, Pa./Academy Park) led the Warriors with five tackles and a sack and junior
Caleb Shertzer (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) also added five tackles and a sack. Freshman
Kyle Sullivan (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) also notched five tackles. Fenningham and Bierbach each had three tackles and an interception and freshman
Tanner Troutman (Middletown, Pa./Middletown Area) also posted an interception. Sophomore
C.J. Arhontakis (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and junior
Roger Jayne (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake Lehman) each had a tackle and a fumble recovery. Junior
Pat McNamera posted five tackles, two forced fumbles and a tackle for loss for the Warriors.
Hopson posted 203 yards through the air, posting 16-of-29 with two touchdowns and an interception. Jeromie Miller caught five passes for 84 yards. Wilson caught four passes for 27 yards and a touchdown and Anthony Smith posted four receptions for 52 yards. Hopson led the team’s rushing attack with eight carries for 46 yards.
Donnell Brown led the Mustangs with 15 tackles and Michael Higgins, Tim Campbell a nd Anthony Arcell each had seven tackles. Paul Barbour posted five tackles and an interception.
The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Oct. 29, when they wrap up their road slate with an important MAC battle with Lebanon Valley at 1 p.m.
