BALTIMORE, Md. – In its first ever NCAA tournament appearance, the Lycoming College men’s tennis team fell to perennial powerhouse Drew University 5-0 on Friday, May 14. Freshman Cody Heffner was just one game away from winning his sixth-flight match before Drew won their fifth contest to seal the win.
In doubles, the Warriors were swept 3-0, with the closest match coming in the second flight. Brothers
Robert and
David Brown battled tough, dropping their match 8-5. In the third flight, Heffner and
Phillip Shannon fell 8-3.
Heffner won his first set 6-1 and was up 5-0 in the second set. In the third flight,
Jason Mifsud won his first set, needing an extra game to do it, 7-5. In the second flight, junior
Alex Beattie was locked in a tough match, down just 4-5.
Lycoming concludes its season with a 10-3 overall record and advanced to the NCAA tournament after winning the Commonwealth Conference’s automatic qualifier. Under ninth-year head coach, JohnDorner, who was named the Commonwealth Conference Coach of the Year, the Warriors posted their first winning season since 1982, and their first above a .500 winning percentage under Dorner.
The Warriors look to be strong again next season, returning all six participants in the NCAA tournament.
