WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College men’s tennis team will face Drew University in the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday, May 14, at Goucher College in Towson, Md. Match time is set for noon.
This will be the Warriors' first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament. Under ninth-year head coach John Dorner, Lycoming supports an overall record of 10-2 and has won its last four matches. This marks the Warriors' first winning season since 1982. Lycoming and Drew have not met since the Rangers joined the Landmark Conference following the 2007 season.
Lycoming qualified for the tournament after earning the Commonwealth’s automatic qualifier, rallying from a 4-1 deficit to defeat Elizabethtown College 5-4 on Saturday, May 8. Drew is 12-6 overall and earned a berth after winning its 10th consecutive league title, including three straight in the Landmark Conference. The winner will face host Johns Hopkins University in the second round on Saturday, May 15.
Lycoming is led by junior
Alex Beattie, who was tabbed the Commonwealth Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player. He is 12-2 overall this season and advanced to the finals of the MAC Individual Tournament.
Freshman
Jason Mifsud also advanced to the individual finals, battling in the second round to win 1-6, 6-4, 10-3. Fellow freshman
David Brown has performed exceptionally well in the fourth flight this season, carrying an overall record of 12-1. His only loss came in the individual tournament.
In doubles action, the Brown brothers, David and
Robert, dominated the circuit, posting an overall record of 13-1, including 10-0 in dual meets.
