Football drops grinding 17-13 decision to Wilkes

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.
--- The Lycoming College football team scored on both its trips into the red zone, but fell to Wilkes University 17-13 on Saturday, Oct. 31. Senior wide out Brad Shellenberger had his first receiving touchdown of the season.
 
Lycoming slips to 3-5 on the season and 2-3 in the Middle Atlantic Conference while Wilkes improves to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the MAC.
 
On the Colonels’ opening drive, the Lycoming defense forced a field goal situation. On the ensuing kick, Wilkes missed the attempt after the ball was tipped at the line by a Warrior defender.
 
The Lycoming team was disciplined, with just three penalties for 39 yards, while the Wilkes squad had eight flags for 66 yards.
 
Both teams played to a scoreless first quarter. The Colonels found the scoreboard first, at 6:21 in the second period, going up 7-0 on a seven-play, 61-yard drive that took just under four minutes.
 
Senior quarterback Tim Hook (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) saw his first action of the season in the second quarter, throwing three passes, all of which were caught, totaling 21 yards. Hook hit wide receiver Ryan Wagaman (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) for one pass and running back Josh Kleinfelter (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood-Antis) with two passes.
 
Wilkes grabbed a 10-0 lead to end the first half on a 40-yard field goal by place kicker Chris Horn.
 
The Warriors opened the second half with a score, closing the gap, 10-7. Kleinfelter took a four-yard run into the Wilkes end zone. Setting up the score, Kleinfelter took off for an 18-yard run, followed by senior quarterback Colin Dwyer (Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) connecting with Shellenberger (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) on a 30-yard pass down to the Wilkes four yard line.
 
Late in the third quarter, Wilkes found the end zone again, this time on a four yard pass from quarterback Rob Johnson to Eli Hollock.

Lycoming clawed back into the game with a 12-play, 55 yard drive, scoring with just 1:40 left in the contest. Dwyer connected with Shellenberger on a seven yard touchdown pass, but the Warriors failed to convert the PAT kick, setting the final score at 17-13.
 
Dwyer finished the game with 120 passing yards on 26 attempts, completing 14, one for a touchdown. Kleinfelter picked up 61 yards on 13 attempts, averaging 4.7 yards a carry. Shellenberger was the team-high receiver, hauling in four catches for 43 yards.
 
On defense, Chuck Bellitto (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) had a stand-out game, registering 15 tackles, including nine solo. Anthony Marascio (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge)totaled 11 tackles, with eight coming assisted. Defensive end Ted Geurds (Douglasville, Pa./Daniele Boone) chipped in a solid defensive effort with nine tackles, five of which were solo. He also forced a fumble.
 
Lycoming will travel to Lebanon Valley for its final road game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 7, for a 1 p.m. kick off.
