WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – After helping the Lycoming College wrestling team maintain a national ranking throughout the season,
Roger Crebs '86 was named the Robert Darrow Curry Coach of the Year for the fourth time during the Senior Athlete Celebration & Athletics Recognition Banquet on Wednesday night, May 8.
Coming into the year, the Warriors did not have an NCAA Championship qualifier for just the second time in Crebs' 32 seasons as head coach and that certainly lent a bit of fuel to the fire for the team this year.
Throughout the season, four Warriors were nationally-ranked (junior 125-pounder
Kaden Majcher, sophomore 149-pounder
Kobin Karper, sophomore 174-pounder
Eli Crum, senior 197-pounder
Gable Crebs) and five were regionally-ranked.
He became the seventh Division III coach and 17
th coach in college wrestling history to win 450 dual meets with a 24-18 win over Division II Seton Hill on Jan. 20. The team was also consistently nationally-ranked Dual Meet rankings throughout the season, finishing the year 25
th in Open Mat's rankings as it recorded an 11-2 mark in duals.
Â
To cap the year, the team placed sixth at NCAA Southeast Regional and 39
th at the NCAA Championships, with six Warriors placing at the NCAA Southeast Regional and one heading to the NCAA Championships in
Gable Crebs.
As if that weren't enough, the team earned NWCA Scholar All-American Team honors for the second straight year and five team members earned NWCA Scholar All-American honors.
Â
The Robert Darrow Curry Coach of the Year award was established in 2008 in memory of Robert (Robby) D. Curry '05, who was the son of Susan and Robert Curry '69 to honor a member of the Lycoming College coaching staff that has helped his/her team excel both on and off the field.
