Brown wraps up time at NCAAs

INDIANAPOLIS – Junior Katherine Brown (Abington, Pa./Glenside) wrapped up her time at the NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday morning, March 19, finishing 65th in the 100-yard freestyle with the second-fastest time in the history of the Lycoming College women's swim team at the IU Natatorium.

"In the last three weeks, we made some changes and she executed really well this week," Lycoming head coach Andrew Dragunas said. "She is starting to see her potential in the pool if she hasn't already."

Brown posted a 54.41, just two one-hundredths behind the top time in program history of 54.39 set by Julie Harahush set in 2005.

Brown also finished 17th in the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday and 69th in the 50-yard freestyle on Wednesday. Her time of 1:04.38 in the breaststroke was just five-one-hundredths of a second off the time of 1:04.33 from Bates' Abigail Gibbons, which would have guaranteed Brown a spot in the consolation finals and an Honorable Mention All-American accolade from the CSCAA. Brown entered the event seeded 19th at 1:03.88, turned in a split of 30.58 before posting a 33.80 on the return trip.

The Glenside, Pa., native is the first Warrior woman to compete at the NCAA Championships since Denise Zimmerman in 1984.

The MAC's David B. Eavenson Swimmer of the Year, Brown set school records in each of the individual events she swam in at the MAC Championships, winning two and setting the MAC record in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:03.88.

"I think she's done an incredible job this year overall," Dragunas added. "MAC Championships went really well for Katherine. I think the proof is in the pudding. She had a breakout season and we're planning on next year being better than this. She worked hard every day for the last 23 weeks. I'm ridiculously proud of her. She's met expectations and exceeded them. She's done a bang-up job with everything. She's the kind of kid who does everything you ask her and says 'OK Coach.' She's a great athlete. I think she achieved everything she wanted to here. She did a bang-up job."
