Branigan, DiNicola take team crowns at virtual pentathlon

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Carter Branigan (Lansdowne, Pa./Commonwealth Charter) surpassed a pool record and notched the top men's total time and freshman Elisa DiNicola (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) notched the top total women's time to lead the Lycoming College swim teams during a virtual pentathlon on Saturday morning, March 13.

The Warriors competed in five events – the 50-yard freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly and the 100-yard individual medley during the meet.

Branigan notched a time of 58.68 in the 100-yard individual medley to just edge out junior Jake Booth (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) for the men's pentathlon title, as Branigan notched a total time of 2:49.42 in the five races and Booth finished in 2:50.01.

Branigan's time in the 100-yard IM beat out the pool record of 59.11 set by Andrew Canavan in 2017 during a meet with Stevenson, as he edged out Booth by 0.90 seconds in the event, making up for the 0.29 second advantage Booth held heading into the event.

Branigan also won the 50-yard butterfly (25.16), while Booth won the 50-yard backstroke (26.88) and 50-yard freestyle (24.18).

Sophomore William Marcinkowski (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle College) won the 50-yard breaststroke, helping him take fourth on the team in 3:05.46. Freshman C.J. Zortman (York, Pa./York Suburban), buoyed by two third-place finishes and a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (24.28) took third overall in 3:02.85.

DiNicola won the women's side in 3:20.15, as freshman captured the top three slots, with Courtney Chapman (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) (3:33.21) and Ruth Kauffman (Sunrise, Fla./Homeschooled) (3:34.01) rounding out the top three, just ahead of junior Devon Kaiser (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) (3:34.44).

Senior Cara Zortman (York, Pa./Suburban York) led the Warriors with three individual race wins, but did not compete in the breaststroke. She won the butterfly (28.55), backstroke (31.41) and freestyle (26.09). Sophomore Katherine Brown (Glenside, Pa./Abington) won the 50-yard breaststroke (32.39) and took second in the freestyle (26.43), only swimming those events. The pair also combined in the 100-yard IM to post a 58.66, with Zortman doing the butterfly and backstroke and Brown the breaststroke and freestyle.

DiNicola won the IM in 1:11.13 after taking second in the butterfly (28.75) and backstroke (32.89) and third in the freestyle (27.11).

The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday, March 20, in a virtual meet with FDU-Florham.
