Swartwood leads Lycoming on first day of Budd Whitehill Duals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Senior 174-pounder Hadyn Swartwood (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) collected three pins to lead the Lycoming College wrestling team as it went 1-2 on the first day of the Budd Whitehill National Duals on Friday, Jan. 10. The Warriors won, 33-11, against Williams and fell to 17th-ranked Messiah, 32-17, and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 25-22, to finish third in Pool B, sending them into the ninth-place bracket on Saturday.

Swartwood moved to 93-30 in his career with 37 pins, as his 93 wins are tied for 13th with Jamie Yonkin (1995-99) in the program's record book, and his 37 pins are tied for fourth with Aaron Fitt (1992-97).

Seniors Trevor Corl (157, Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) and Brody Keefe (197, Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) both had two wins. Corl secured a 3-1 sudden victory win against Wis.-Stevens Point and a 17-0 tech fall in his match against Williams. Keefe worked over Messiah's Joe Embleton and Williams' Olamide Adeyeri for two first period pins.
Lycoming (8-4) defeated Williams, 33-11, in their final bout of the day. Freshman 133-pounder Sam Hanley (Danielsville, Pa./Northampton) worked for a 18-4 major decision, junior Josiah McClarren (West Decatur,Pa./Clearfield) picked up a 9-2 decision at 149 pounds and Corl's tech fall gave Lycoming a lead before Swartwood, freshman 185-pounder Mason Novak (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin), Keefe and freshman heavyweight Nick Winfield (Orbisonia,Pa./Southern Huntington) sealed the dual win with four straight wins.
Lycoming won five bouts in the dual meet against Wisconsin-Stevens Point, but a couple of Pointers' pins at 197 and 285 helped end the meet, 25-22, in favor of the Pointers. Junior Shane Casey (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) started the dual off with a forfeit at 125 pounds. Senior Joe Santomarco (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and Corl won back-to-back matches at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively, and Swartwood and freshman Gable Crebs (Montoursville, Pa/Montoursville) won at 174 and 184 pounds, giving the Warriors a 22-13 lead before the Pointers mounted their comeback, as D3wrestling.com honorable mentions Jerry Lipke and Noah Wieczorek each had pins to close out the dual.

Against Messiah, the Falcons won seven of 10 bouts, including the first six before Swartwood got a first period pin over Brian Shermeyer at 174 pounds. Keefe pinned his opponent in 1:21 and sophomore heavyweight Conner Fulmer (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) won his first bout in a Lycoming singlet with a pin at the two-minute mark.

The Warriors will resume wrestling on Saturday, Jan. 11, for the second day of the Budd Whitehill National Duals with wrestling set to begin at 9 a.m.
