Ebner’s pin gives Warriors sweep at W&L Duals

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior Skylar Ebner (Muncy, Pa./Muncy Area) lifted the Lycoming College wrestling team to a come-from-behind win over 24th-ranked Coast Guard with a pin in his 285-pound match to lift Lycoming to its third straight perfect day at the Washington & Lee Duals, beating Muskingum 45-19, Coast Guard 21-20 and Southern Virginia 50-6, on Monday, Dec. 19.

The Warriors improved to 10-1 overall, the team's best start since the 2001-02 team started with the same record before finishing with a 21-4 record. The three wins improved Crebs' overall record in 24 years at Lycoming to 373-126-2 (.746), leaving him three wins from the school-record of 376 set by Budd Whitehill from 1956-93 (376-173-5).

The Warriors fell behind 14-0 in the dual meet with Coast Guard, the 500th dual in Crebs' career. However, senior Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa./Line Mountain), the nation's top-grappler at 149 pounds, got Lycoming on the board with a pin in 2:39 of Matthew Vieira. After the Bears went up 17-6 with a decision at 157, seventh-ranked 165-pound senior Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) posted a 7-1 decision over Nick Remke and 174-pound junior Brandon Conrad (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) posted a 7-3 win over Michael Palomba, listed as honorable mention by d3wrestle.com, to close the gap to 17-12.

Coast Guard picked up a decision at 184 pounds before freshman Travis Ogden (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) posted a huge 5-2 win over Phil Azzari, listed as honorable mention by d3wrestle.com, to make it 20-15, setting up Ebner's match. Ebner scored a takedown in the second minute of the first period and quickly worked the takedown into a pin over Patrick Irwin to secure Lycoming's first win over a ranked team this year.

In its other two matches, the Warriors were able to build up big leads in wins over Muskingum and Southern Virgina.

Against the Muskies, the Warriors scored pins in five straight contested matches to take a 36-6 lead en route to a 45-9 win. Freshman Jacob Chamberlin (Allenwood, Pa./Montgomery Area) (133), Lansberry (149), freshman Hadyn Swartwood (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) (157), Barger (165) and Conrad (174) all secured pins in a row before Ogden (197) also added one after Muskingum ended the run with a decision at 174.

Against Southern Virginia, the Warriors benefitted from five forfeits and added bonus points in all four of their other wins to post the 50-6 win. Sophomore Will Newmiller (Drexel Hill, Pa./Haverford) posted a major decision at 133 pounds, Barger and Ogden each had technical falls and Conrad posted a pin.

Lansberry improved to 20-0 on the season, which is tied for the 11th-longest winning streak in program history. The senior improved to 124-21 in his career, just three wins shy of the school-record of 127 set by Royce Eyer from 1997-01. Barger improved to 20-1 on his season and 121-23 in his career, as he is now tied for Andy Lausier (1996-01) for third in school history in career wins.

The wrestlers are the fifth and sixth in school history to record 20 wins in each of their four seasons in the program, joining Eyer, Lausier, Eric Walker (1996-00) and Bryan Neidigh (1986-90).

The Warriors get back on the mat on Saturday, Jan. 7, when they head to RIT for the Pa./N.Y. Duals, facing RIT at 1 p.m. and SUNY Oswego at 3 p.m.
