Warriors head into second half of season with trip to FDU

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - After ending on the wrong side of a dramatic 24-21 four-overtime thriller against Widener, the Lycoming College football team will look to rebound when it heads to FDU-Florham for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The Warriors (2-3 overall, 1-3 MAC) forced four turnovers against Widener, with junior Mike Ward recovering two fumbles and adding an interception. Sophomore Khamari Williams also picked off a pass in the game.

The Devils (1-3 overall, 1-2 MAC) posted a 32-28 come-from-behind win over Wilkes, with sophomore quarterback Jagger Green finding sophomore Michael Panzarino for a 22-yard touchdown with 15 seconds left.

Warrior Notes
• Junior Mike Ward leads the nation with four fumble recoveries, which is also tied for seventh in school history.

• Ward's two fumble recoveries and interception against Widener gave him the most turnovers in a game for a Warrior since Tanner Troutman picked off three passes against Stevenson in 2013.

• Ward and freshman punter Brandon Miller were each named to the D3football.com Team of the Week for their performances against Widener.

• Senior Blake Bowman leads the MAC with nine rushing touchdowns and 550 rushing yards.

• Sophomore Nick Costello has posted at least 80 receiving yards in each of the last four games.

• Senior Chase Whiteman needs 187 more passing yards to become the 12th player in school history to reach 3,000 yards.

D3Football.com Team of the Week
Junior safety Mike Ward and freshman punter Brandon Miller each earned a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week after their performances against Widener. Ward recovered two fourth-quarter fumbles and added an interception in the 24-21 four-overtime loss. Both recoveries came with less than five minutes left in regulation and his second recovery led to a 41-yard TD that sent the game to OT. His pick came at the one-yard line in the first overtime. Ward added seven tackles in the contest. Miller averaged 44.3 yards on seven punts, with a long of 48 in a defensive battle against Widener. He launched two of his seven punts inside the 20 and Widener garnered just 22 return yards in the game, meaning Lycoming netted 41.1 yards per boot.

Forcing It
Junior safety Mike Ward has been a part of a turnover in each of the first five games this year, establishing a new scool-record. He posted a first-quarter fumble recovery against Susquehanna that led to a Lycoming touchdown. Against King's, he dove for a first-quarter interception that led to another touchdown. He added a fourth-quarter fumble recovery against Albright and he forced a fumble in the first quarter against Misericordia. Ward added two fumble recoveries and an interception against Widener. Ward's four fumble recoveries leads Division III while his two interceptions leave him seventh in the MAC in the category.

A Big Boot
Freshman Brandon Miller has gotten out to an impressive start as Lycoming's punter. The Slatington, Pa., native is averaging 42.1 yards through his first 26 punts, which is already the second-highest single-season average in program history and sits 13th in Division III. Miller has a 59-yarder to his credit, along with six inside the 20, one touchback and he has forced four fair catches. The Warriors are netting a MAC-best 38.54 yards per punt, which is 13th-best in Division III.

Time and a Half
Even a week later, it is still a little hard to believe the ending of Lycoming's game with Widener. The game, which ran into four overtimes, was the longest in the NCAA Division III since a four-overtime game where Endicott beat Curry, 27-21, on Nov. 7, 2015. The longest game in Lycoming's history, it was the longest in Division III since a six-overtime thriller where Whittier beat Puget Sound, 42-39, in 2010. It was the longest overtime game in MAC history and is tied for the longest game in the NCAA this year - North Carolina A&T beat Kent State, 39-36, and Tulane downed Louisiana-Lafayette, 41-39, in four overtimes.

Here is a look at each of the overtime periods and how they ended:
1st Overtime
Widener - Mike Ward interception at 1-yard line
Lycoming - James Rendle blocks 38-yard field goal attempt
2nd Overtime
Lycoming - Chase Whiteman rush for 11-yard touchdown (Devon Flynn kick)
Widener - Chris Randle rush for 2-yard touchdown (Michael Raczak kick)
3rd Overtime
Widener - Khamari Williams interception at 6-yard line
Lycoming - Turnover on downs at 28-yard line
4th Overtime
Lycoming - Turnover on downs at 41-yard line
Widener - Raczak 33-yard field goal

The Bowman Watch
As has seemingly been custom for running backs in the Mike Clark era, senior Blake Bowman is looking to leave a large impact on the college's record book. Some milestones that Bowman, who set a school single-season record with 18 rushing touchdowns is approaching include:
- 174 rushing yards from tying Cory Sheridan (1989-92) for sixth in program history with 2,398 yards
- 1 touchdown from tying Tim Deasey (1998-01) for second in school history with 29 rushing touchdowns
- 1 100-yard rushing game from tying Deasey for fourth in school history with 10
- 86 all-purpose yards from tying Troy Erdman for 11th in school history with 2,857 yards
- 3 touchdowns from tying Deasey for fourth in school history with 33

MAC leader
Senior Blake Bowman is not just leaving an impact on the Lycoming College record book. He is also making an impact on a conference and national level. His nine rushing touchdowns lead the MAC and are third in Division III, while his 550 rushing yards also lead the league and are 18th in the nation. Bowman's average of 10.8 points per game also leads the league and is 28th nationally, while his 139.8 all-purpose yards tops the MAC and is 71st in the country.

Mital a Campbell Trophy semifinalist
Senior offensive lineman Austin Mital was announced as a candidate for the National Football Foundation's National Scholar-Athlete Awards, making him one of 156 semifinalists for the 2016 William V. Campbell Trophy. On the field, Mital has started all five games as the team's left guard as a senior. Mital stepped full-time into the starting lineup as a junior after being hindered by injuries as a sophomore. The healthy 6-3, 290-pounder developed into a Second Team All-MAC selection while helping the offense roll up 1,825 rushing yards, the fifth-highest total in school history. Also an outstanding student, the physics major is a two-time member of the MAC Academic Honor Roll and he was an Academic All-MAC selection as a junior. He has also volunteered for Favors Forward with the football team in each of the last three years.
