Warriors head into ninth-place bracket at Whitehill Duals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Juniors Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa./Line Mountain) and Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) and sophomore Brandon Conrad (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) each posted undefeated runs during the first day of the Budd Whitehill National Duals, helping the team to a 41-6 win over Trine before it fell to Millikin, 24-20, and No. 16 Williams, 27-17.

Lansberry provided the highlight of the day for the Warriors (9-5 overall) at 149 pounds, as his three wins all came by technical fall, including a 19-4 win over eighth-ranked Jake Savoca of Williams in the final match of the day.

The Warriors will head into the 9-12 place group of the tournament on Saturday, Jan. 9, facing Thiel at 9 a.m. and the respective winner/loser of the match between Oswego and Springfield at 12 p.m.

The Warriors had a run of four pins in a row of the heart of its opening meet against Trine, helping propel it to an easy 41-6 win.

Senior Matt Neff (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) got the team started, dropping Sean Jones on his back and finishing the pin in 1:13 at 157 pounds. Junior Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) followed with a first-period pin over Brandon Gay at 165 before sophomore Brandon Conrad (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) dropped JayCee Jensen in 2:15 at 174. Sophomore Brandon Rudy (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) finished off the run with a pin over Kerry Raab in 1:48 at 184, giving Lycoming a 38-3 lead.

Sophomore Kyle Drick (Allenwood, Pa./Montgomery Area) started the meet with a pin of David Moore in 2:13 at 125 before freshman Andy Aguilar (Muncy, Pa./Muncy) added a 5-3 decision over Caleb Maddox at 133. After Trine earned a win by decision, junior Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa./Line Mountain) posted a 16-0 technical fall over Zach Krumlauf at 149, setting up the Warriors' run of pins.

After a decision by Trine at 197, senior Max Lamport (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) finished off the meet with an 11-4 decision over Joe Stasiak at 285.

In the second meet, the Warriors built a 20-8 lead before Millikin stormed back with 16 points in the final three bouts to post a 24-20 win.

Aguilar got the Warriors on the board with a 16-0 technical fall over Zack Whitsel at 133 pounds to tie the match at five and freshman Joe Santomarco (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) followed with a 15-4 major decision over Paul Stewart at 141 pounds. Lansberry capped the 14-point run with a technical fall over Kerin Rodriguez, 17-1.

After a loss at 157 pounds, the Warriors expanded the lead to 20-8 with a pair of decisions, with Barger posting a 7-1 win over Dylan Knisley at 165 and Conrad notching a 4-2 sudden-victory win over Stephan Birt at 174. The Big Blue fought back with a pin at 184, a major decision at 197 and a pin at 285 to take the match, 24-20, though.

Lycoming again put together a tough effort in the final bout of the day, but 16th-ranked Williams College used wins in six bouts to post a 27-17 win to secure the title in Group C and advance to Saturday's semifinals.

The Ephs built a 10-0 lead through the first three matches before Lansberry stopped the run cold with his technical fall of Savoca at 149 pounds. After top-ranked Jorge Lopez posted a pin at 157 pounds for the Ephs, the Warriors scored back-to-back decisions, with Barger notching a 5-0 win over Tim Garripoli at 165 and Conrad notched a 4-1 win over Carl Sangree at 174 pounds to help Lycoming close within five points at 16-11.
