Hot-hitting Warriors down Knights, 3-1

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Thanks to a season-high .321 hitting percentage, the Lycoming College volleyball team was able to outlast Arcadia University, 3-1 (25-21, 24-26, 25-22, 25-18), in Lycoming's Commonwealth Conference opener on Wednesday night, Sept. 16, at Lamade Gym.
 
The Warriors (9-5 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth) were led by sophomore Kristine Jahn (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley), as she notched 15 kills, nine digs and three blocks while hitting .389. Both junior Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) and sophomore Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) contributed 13 kills, with Richardson hitting .480 and Slawson hitting .393 with seven digs.
 
With the match tied at a set a piece and the third set tied at nine, the Warriors got three points off kills from Richardson and freshman Catherine Burger (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) before an ace from sophomore Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York). The Knihts couldn't get closer than two points the rest of the set and a kill from sophomore Tayler Whitman (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) gave Lycoming the 25-22 win.
 
In the fourth set, Lycoming took an 11-6 lead after three straight points off Fink's serve. The Knights were able to close within two points twice, but with the score 17-15, the Warriors closed the set on a 8-3 run, with Slawson notching a kill to close out the match.
 
In the first set, the Warriors jumped out to a 13-9 lead, but the Knights closed within one at 21-20 before a kill by Jahn gave the Warriors a two-point lead. After both teams traded a sideout, Whitman delivered a big kill and then teamed with Jahn for a block to give the Warriors a 25-21 lead.
 
Lycoming took a six-point lead at 21-15, but Kathryn Ahern served up seven straight points and Arcadia's Natalie Cadmus delivered two kills with the set tied at 24 to give Arcadia the set.
 
Fink notched eight kills, 13 digs, four aces and two blocks and Burger posted 50 assists and eight digs. Whitman added six kills, 10 digs and four blocks.
 
Makenna Micklus led the Knights with 17 kills and Cadmus added 16 kills and 11 digs. Both Nicolette Bonagura and Ahern posted 13 gids and Alexia Bell notched 40 assists and 12 digs.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Sept. 20, when they head to Marymount (Va.) for a tri-match that will also feature Washington (Md.). The Warriors will tip off with Washington at 2 p.m. and Marymount at 4 p.m.
