Joelle Winey (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) and five shots offensively were not enough for the Lycoming College women's soccer team, as it fell to Westminster College, 1-0, in its home opener at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Sunday, Sept. 14.
Â
The Warriors (0-6 overall) allowed a season low in goals thanks to an outstanding defensive effort from the team's backline. Even though the Titans (5-2 overall) posted 18 shots in the game, they had few quality chances.
Â
The Titans, however, did score in the 19
th minute, as Raechel Pusateri streaked down the left sideline before crossing over and sending a shot into the right corner of the net for her second goal of the year.
Â
Winey finished with eight saves and junior
Kelly Ambruso (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) also kicked a shot off the goal line in the 42
nd minute to keep it a close game.
Â
In the second half, the Warriors began to get more pressure forward, taking four of their five shots in the period, but the team couldn't get a shot on net. Junior
Bree Nishibun (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) led the team with two shots during the half.
Â
Westminster keeper Rachael Letscher earned the win by making one save in the first half in net. Madeline Frech played the second half.
Â
The Warriors stay in the friendly confines of the Shangraw Athletic Complex for their next game as well, hosting Baptist Bible on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 3:30 p.m.
