Matt McCaffer (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) scored three goals and junior
Sean Reilly (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post West) notched two goals and an assist to lead the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team on Wednesday, April 9, but a seven-goal fourth quarter from Elizabethtown College helped it pull away for a 13-6 Commonwealth Conference win at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
The Warriors (6-5 overall, 4-1 Commonwealth), who had won six straight games, scooped up 28 ground balls in the game, which was designated as a fund raiser for the Community Alliance for Progressive Positive Action (CAPPA), with more than $57 pledged for each ground ball the team scooped up. In all, the team's efforts will bring in more than $1700 for the Williamsport-based organization.
McCaffer helped the Warriors rally from a six-goal deficit midway through the fourth quarter. Down 9-3, Lycoming scored three goals in a 2:30 span to get back into the game, with sophomore
Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) finding Reilly for a man-up goal with 6:20 left to start the rally. McCaffer scored twice in a 20-second span to finish the rally, with junior
Thomas Hanson (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) and senior
Jason Breau (Lima, N.Y./Honeyoye Falls-Lima) assisting the goals, making it 9-6 with 3:54 left.
However, Elizabethtown (5-6 overall, 1-3 Commonwealth) responded with the last four goals of the game, three from Joe Clark, to earn its first Commonwealth Conference win.
The Blue Jays scored the first two goals of the game after a silent first 10 minutes. Reilly closed the Warriors within a goal, but Elizabethtown scored the next three to take a 5-1 lead into the break.
The Warriors cut the lead to three goals in the third quarter when junior
Christian Jacobs (Gwynn Oak, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) scored on a drive just 58 seconds into the half, but Elizabethtown again responded with four of the next five goals, taking a 9-3 lead with 7:41 left in the fourth quarter.
Senior
Ben Adrian (Dallas, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) led the Warriors with six ground balls and three caused turnovers and Hanson added two pickups and four caused turnovers. Junior
John Scarponi (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) picked up four ground balls along with Cooper and junior
Trevor Williams (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic). Breau finished with two assists.
Clark led the Blue Jays with five goals and Jason Clough added two goals and two assists. Mike Specht scored twice, Russ LeClair notched three assists and Nick Specht posted a goal and assist along with Dan Bednarki and Jimmy Waters. Matt Frey and David Shatzer each caused two turnovers and picked up four ground balls.
The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, April 12, when they head to Widener for a 1 p.m. Commonwealth Conference game.
