Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHESTER, Pa. – An RBI single down the right-field line in the top of the 10th inning by sophomore Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) followed by a huge defensive play by sophomore shortstop Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) helped the Lycoming College softball team post a 5-4 win in the nightcap to split a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with Widener University, falling 4-2 in game one, on Saturday, April 5, at the Widener University Softball Field.

With the international tiebreaker coming into effect in conference games in the 10th inning, freshman Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) took second to start the top of the 10th with the score tied at four. Sophomore Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) laid down a bunt, setting up Thomas' game-winning single down the right-field line.

In the bottom of the inning, Widener (12-6 overall, 4-4 Commonwealth) laid down a sac bunt to move the runner to third to start the inning. On the next play, though, shortstop Witmer fielded a grounder and fired home for the out. A hit batter put two runners on, but Thomas caught a deep fly ball in center field to end the game.

The Warriors (8-9 overall, 1-5 Commonwealth) were forced to rally from down two in the sixth inning, as sophomore Shawna Risley (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) reached on an error to lead off. She moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on a double to right center by sophomore Chelsey Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area). Poorman came around to score on an outfield fielding error off a single through the right side by junior Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge), tying the game at three.

In the seventh, the Warriors took the lead, as Crabb led off with a double to right center. She moved to third on the second of three sac bunts by Weaver and scored on a sac fly by Thomas.

The Pride tied the game in the bottom of the inning, though, as a dropped fly ball led to a run. In the eighth, the Pride got a one-out double from Alie Alkins, but Weaver, who relieved junior starter Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) at the start of the inning, ended the threat with a strikeout. That was the last threat for either team before the Warriors scored in the 10th.

Lycoming got on the board in the first inning, as Marianelli hit a homer down the left field line before Widener took the lead with single runs in the second, third and fifth innings.

Marianelli led the Warriors, going 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI, as she posted two of the team's five hits. Crabb added two runs and Thomas two RBI.

Widener wrapped just four hits in the game, with two coming from Angela Hood, who also added two RBI and a homer.

Lapano got the hard-luck no-decision, pitching seven innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs. She walked one and struck out two. Weaver (6-5) pitched three innings in relief, allowing one hit and striking out three.

Alexis Schengrund (8-3) took the loss for the Pride, allowing two hits and one earned run in 4 2/3 innings of relief. She struck out six.

In the first game, Widener used three singles and a walk in the first inning to cruise to a 4-2 win.

The Warriors closed within two runs in the fifth inning, as Crabb singled to lead off, moved to second on a sac bunt, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out infield single by junior Katie Pugh (Sykesville, Md./Century).

The Pride responded with a run off an error in the fifth inning before the Warriors got another run in the sixth, with Witmer leading off with a walk. She moved to second on a sac bunt and took third on a throwing error by the catcher. She scored on another outfield throwing error. However, she was the Warriors last base runner.

Lapano walked twice for the Warriors and Witmer walked once and added a hit, as Lycoming scratched out just three hits in the game.

Jackie Korang went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI and Taylor Church also added two hits and a RBI.

Schengrund earned the win, striking out eight and walking three in five innings. She allowed three hits and a run. Salina Allebach earned the save, allowing an unearned run and one walk in two innings.

Weaver took the loss for the Warriors, as she allowed six hits and three earned runs in six innings. She walked and struck out one.

The Warriors get back in action on Sunday, April 6, when they host Hood in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex. Between games of the doubleheader, the Warriors will honor their one member of the MAC Century Team, Dr. Jeanine (Evans) Page '00.
