Weaver throws shutout to lead Warriors to split

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Sophomore Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton) put together one of the finest outings of her career, tossing a two-hit shutout in the first game to lead the Lycoming College softball team to a Commonwealth Conference split with Stevenson on Sunday, April 13, winning the first game, 4-0, before falling in the nightcap, 11-6.
 
Weaver (8-8) allowed five base runners through the first three innings, but after allowing her second hit to Kaitlyn Segar with one out in the third, she allowed just one more base runner the rest of the way, finishing the game with three strikeouts and just one walk.
 
The Warriors' offense, meanwhile, got on the board in the first inning and added three more one-run innings en route to the win. Freshman Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) singled to right field with one out, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a double to left by sophomore Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor).
 
In the third inning, junior Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) singled to right, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by freshman Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg). In the sixth, sophomore Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) extended the lead to 3-0 with a home run to left center.
 
The Warriors rounded out the scoring in the seventh, as Kunes singled up the middle and after a sac bunt by Marianelli, she scored on a single by Witmer.
 
Kunes went 2-for-4 with two runs and Witmer went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Warriors (11-16 overall, 4-8 Commonwealth) in the win.
 
Briana Pichalski (8-6) took the loss for the Mustangs (14-15 overall, 4-8 Commonwealth), as she tossed seven innings and allowed four runs. She walked one and struck out three.
 
In the second game, Stevenson scored all 11 of its runs in the first three innings en route to the doubleheader split with the 11-6 win.
 
The Mustangs scored three runs in the first inning thanks to two walks, two errors and a double. The Warriors got a run back in the top of the second inning, as Witmer led off with a walk, moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on a two-out single by Crabb.
 
The Mustangs took a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the inning, though, as they posted six hits in the frame en route to the four-run frame. The Warriors cut the lead to three runs in the top of the third, as Kunes singled with one out. After a flyout, Witmer delivered a RBI single and Weaver also followed with a single, setting up a two-RBI double from junior Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity).
 
In the bottom of the third, though, Stevenson got four more runs thanks to four doubles and a single to make it 11-4.
 
The Warriors drew one run closer in the fourth, with Thomas singling before moving up on a sacrifice bunt and scoring on an error. The Warriors added another run in the sixth, with junior Katie Pugh (Sykesville, Md./Century) leading off with a walk, moving to second on a sacrifice and scoring on an error.
 
Witmer led the Warriors in the game, as she scored twice and Lapano finished 1-for-2 with two RBI.
 
Abbey DeFeo went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI and Kristen Fassler went 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI to lead the Mustangs. Naomi Fields also went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
 
Lapano (3-7) took the loss for the Warriors, allowing 11 hits and nine earned runs in 2 2/3 innings. Laura Welch (2-1) earned the win for Stevenson, allowing five hits and four runs in three innings.
 
The Warriors get on the field on Tuesday, April 15, when they head to King's for a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
