Warriors drop doubleheader to No. 13 Dutchmen

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Junior Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) posted three hits and a run to lead the Lycoming College softball team  on Tuesday, April 1, but 13th-ranked Lebanon Valley stayed perfect on the season, posting 3-0 and 8-4 Commonwealth Conference wins in a doubleheader at LVC Softball Park.
 
In the first game, Lapano notched both hits for the Warriors (5-6 overall, 0-4 Commonwealth), as Sam Derr (6-0) threw a shutout, retiring 17 in a row at one point, to lead the Flying Dutchmen (13-0 overall, 4-0 Commonwealth) to a 3-0 win.
 
The Dutchmen scored two runs in the bottom of the third, breaking through off Warrior sophomore starter Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area), as Derr hit a two-RBI double. They added one more run in the fifth, as Sammy Bost tripled and scored on a wild pitch.
 
Weaver (3-3) pitched well for the Warriors, allowing eight hits and three runs in the complete game. She struck out two.
 
In the second game, a pair of Lebanon Valley home runs helped the Flying Dutchmen post an 8-4 win to pick up the sweep.
 
The Warriors got on the board first, as Lapano led off the second by reaching on a walk before sophomore Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) reached on a bunt single. After a ground out moved the runners up, Weaver singled up the middle to score pinch-running freshman Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain).
 
In the third inning, though, the Dutchmen scored six runs, with Emily Johnson providing the big blow with a three-run homer. In the fourth, Bost hit a two-run inside-the-park homer to give Lebanon Valley an 8-1 lead.
 
Lycoming rallied in the sixth, as Lapano walked to lead off and Crabb added a one-out walk. Another walk helped sophomore Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) walked to load the bases with two outs, setting up a two-RBI pinch-hit double to left from sophomore Shawna Risley (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle Area). Sophomore Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) followed with a single that scored Thomas to round out the scoring.
 
Weaver finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Lapano went 1-for-2 with a run and two walks to lead the Warrior offense, which knocked out eight hits.
 
Bost went 2-for-3 with two runs, a homer and three RBI and Allie Hartman and Jorey Aumiller each went 2-for-2 with a run.
 
Haley Neff (6-0) earned the win, tossing a complete game while allowing eight hits, seven walks and four wins. She struck out six. Lapano (2-3) took the loss, allowing 10 hits and eight runs in six innings for the Warriors. She struck out three.
 
The Warriors get back in action on Wednesday, April 2, when they head to Elmira for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
