MADISON, N.J. – A stalwart defensive effort that saw junior goalkeeper
Alex Wylly (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) stop 16 shots and an offensive effort that included five man-up goals helped the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team to a 12-5 win over FDU-Florham at Shields Field on Saturday afternoon, March 15.
Â
The win is the first in first-year head coach
Chris Scanlon's tenure, as the Warriors improved to 1-5 overall. FDU-Florham fell to 3-4 overall. Lycoming took advantage of the power play all game, as FDU-Florham was charged for eight penalties, and the Warriors' man-up offense finished 5-8 while holding the Devils to 0-for-3.
Â
Senior
Matt McCaffer (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) led the Warriors with six goals and sophomore
Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and junior
Sean Reilly (Corning, N.Y./Corning Painted Post East) each added two goals and two assists.
Â
Holding a 7-2 lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Warriors nearly left the door open, as FDU-Florham's Connor May scored twice to make it 7-4 with 13:24 left. Both teams had opportunities after that, but it was Lycoming that capitalized first, with Cooper scooping up a ground ball off a failed FDU-Florham clear attempt and then firing a shot into the net.
Â
Off the ensuing faceoff, Reilly found McCaffer for a man-up goal, as Lycoming went on to score the next three goals as well, with junior
Christian Jacobs (Gwynn Oak, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) finding McCaffer for his sixth goal to give Lycoming a 12-4 lead with 3:10 left. The Devils added a late goal to make up the final margin.
Â
The Warriors built a 3-0 lead through the game's first 20 minutes, with Cooper scoring with 9:36 left in the second to cap the run. After a Devils goal, Reilly scored on a pass from junior
Trevor Williams (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) just 30 seconds later and then 40 seconds after that, Reilly found McCaffer for a goal to give the Warriors a 5-1 halftime lead.
Â
FDU-Florham closed within three goals with a goal at the 12:15 mark of the third quarter, but again, the Warriors responded, with McCaffer and Reilly both scoring in the quarter to take a 7-2 lead into the final quarter.
Â
McCaffer led the Warriors with four ground balls, while senior
Ben Adrian (Dallas, Pa./Wyoming Seminary), Williams and freshman
Sig Sahli (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) each added three to help the team scoop up 32.
Â
May and Frank Reda led the Devils with two goals each. Dalton Rimmer led the Devils with six ground balls and Dan Decker posted five.
Â
In net, Wylly (1-5) was outstanding, posting 16 saves, including 11 in the first half, to earn the win for the Warriors while George Beck (3-4) stopped 14 in the loss for the Devils.
Â
The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, March 22, when they head to Gwynedd Mercy for a 3 p.m. non-conference game.
