WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Matt McCaffer (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellis) and senior Jason Breau (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) each had two goals to lead the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team on a sunny Saturday, Feb. 22, but defending Landmark Conference champion Susquehanna University mounted a four-goal rally in the fourth quarter to sneak away with a 9-8 win at the Shangraw Athletic Complex in non-conference action.
 
The Warriors (0-1 overall) built a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, as Breau notched his first tally on a dish from sophomore Lee Pappas (New Windsor, Md./Glenelg Country School) and McCaffer added a tally with 1:42 left in the quarter.
 
In the second quarter, Susquehanna closed within a point, but Pappas found freshman Sig Sahli (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) for a man-up goal to make it 3-1 and sophomore Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) also scored with 5:24 left in the period to give Lycoming a three-goal lead. However, the Crusaders (1-0 overall) made it two goals at halftime as Adam Fox scored with 1:07 left in the quarter.
 
A flurry of goals followed in the first six minutes of the third quarter, as Cooper found Breau for a Lycoming goal before Susquehanna scored twice to close within 5-4. The Warriors responded quickly, with Cooper finding McCaffer and Breau finding junior Steve Troup (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) to get the lead back to 7-4. The Crusaders added one more goal with 3:23 left in the quarter to make it 7-5 heading into the fourth.
 
Cooper assisted on his third goal of the game to start the fourth, as he found sophomore Jake Wanamaker (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) with 12:17 left. The Crusaders rallied, though, scoring twice over the next four minutes before Austen Lein scored with 4:41 left to tie the score. Ryan Buckley scored the game-winner with 2:22 left.
 
The Crusaders won the faceoff, but a groundball pickup by freshman Jacob Eller (Durham, N.C./Riverside) gave Lycoming the ball back with 1:31 left and the Warriors completed the clear, but Susquehanna forced a turnover and held possession to close out the win.
 
Cooper finished with a goal and three assists and Breau added two goals and an assist. Pappas also added two assists. Junior Trevor Williams (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) led the team with five ground balls and Eller added four, as Lycoming held a 29-27 advantage in ground balls. Junior John Scarponi (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) won 11-of-20 faceoffs at the 'x.'
 
Pat Brogan led the Crusaders with two goals and three assists and Lein added two goals and two assists. Jake Calder and Buckley each added two goals. Conor Boyland led the Crusaders with five ground balls and Corrie Van Haaster added four caused turnovers.
 
In net, Wylly (0-2) stopped nine shots for the Warriors and Jared Knowlton (1-0) made 17 saves in the win for the Crusaders.
 
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, Feb. 26, when they head to Rochester, N.Y., to face SUNY Geneseo at Monroe Community College at 4 p.m.
