Warriors down No. 17 Waynesburg, finish 2-2 at Mount Union Duals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Kyle Drick (Allenwood, Pa./Montgomery Area) posted three wins to lead the Lycoming College wrestling team on Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Mount Union Duals, as Lycoming posted wins over No. 17 Waynesburg, 35-10, and Muskingum, 45-9, before falling to No. 24 Mount Union, 34-6, and just coming up short of another upset against No. 14 Thiel, 20-13.

Bonus points in six matches helped Lycoming (5-2 overall) turn in a rout against 17th-ranked Waynesburg (5-3 overall) in the second match of the day, 35-10. With a 17-10 lead heading into the 184-pound match, the Warriors turned on the burners, not allowing the point and scoring three pins in the rest of the match. Senior Nik Christine (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) started the run, downing Patrick Jennings in 1:15 to clinch the win, giving Lycoming a 23-10 lead. Senior Johnathan Secor (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) followed with a pin in 2:36 against Austin Davidson at 197 pounds before senior Sam Batchelor (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) held a 5-0 lead into the third period before putting Shane Lowman on his back in the heavyweight match.

Drick started the match with a 4-3 win over Gordon Bieber at 125 pounds, posting a third-period escape to score the win. After a Yellow Jackets decision at 141 points, sophomore Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa./Line Mountain) notched a 15-1 win over Chris Little at 149 points to take a 7-3 lead. The Yellow Jackets scored a decision at 157, but sophomore Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) posted a come-from-behind effort to take an 8-2 lead at 165 pounds before putting Eric Tuck on his back with 21 seconds left to make it 17-6. A major decision at 174 pounds for Waynesburg set up the Warriors' final run.

Against Muskingum (0-4 overall), the Warriors posted maximum points in the first six bouts, getting three forfeits before Lansberry (149), junior Matt Neff (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) (157) and Barger (165) each posted first period pins. Freshman Brandon Rudy (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) (174) added a come-from-behind decision to take a 10-8 win and sophomore Skylar Ebner (Muncy, Pa./Muncy Area) (197) rounded out the scoring with a first-period pin in his first bout of the year.

The Warriors nearly pulled off another major upset when facing No. 14 Thiel (3-2 overall), but the Tomcats were able to win two matches in overtime to provide the margin of victory in the 20-13 win. Drick opened the match with a 6-0 decision over Giuliano Graziosi and Willey gave Lycoming a 6-3 lead with a 13-6 win over Jason Miller at 141 pounds. Lansberry added a 8-0 major decision against Nick Sutton to give the Warriors a 10-3 lead, but an overtime win at 157 and two narrow decisions spurred a 14-0 run by the Tomcats that gave Thiel a 17-10 lead. Secor posted a 4-3 decision at 197 pounds over Stephen Ceremuga to bring the Warriors within four points, but an overtime loss at heavyweight secured the win for Thiel.

In the third match of the day, Mount Union (5-1 overall) won the first four matches, two late in the third period en route to a 17-0 lead. The Warriors got on the board when Neff tied his match late in the third period and then posted a takedown and a 3-point near fall to clinch a 6-2 win over Alex Funderberg. The Purple Raiders notched 17 more points in the next four matches, though, before Batchelor scored a 2-1 decision over Jacob Alarie.

The Warriors get back in action on Saturday, Dec. 6, when they head to the Ohio Northern University Invitational for a 9 a.m. start.
