Blue Jays outlast Warriors

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Lycoming College women's basketball team held first-place Elizabethtown College to 15 points under its season average, but a second-half run helped Elizabethtown outlast Lycoming, 56-46, in Commonwealth Conference action on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 25, at Thompson Gymnasium.
 
The Warriors (7-9 overall, 4-6 Commonwealth) picked up 18 steals and held a 24-13 advantage in turnovers, but Elizabethtown (14-2 overall, 8-2 Commonwealth) held a 44-33 advantage on the glass and was able to outshoot the Warriors, 40-25 percent.
 
Freshman Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) posted 10 points, four steals, four rebounds and two assists and junior Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) added 10 points, six rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) notched nine points and two steals and junior Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) added four points and five steals, giving her 12 thefts in the last two games.
 
The Warriors jumped out to a 6-0 lead thanks to another hot start from Derr, who scored the first three buckets of the game in the first three and a half minutes before Taylor Kreider finally got on the board with a layup at the 16:05 mark of the half.
 
The Blue Jays scored five points to close within a point, but Lycoming responded with a  3-pointer from Manges get the lead back to six points at 11-5 with 11:19 left in the first half. The Blue Jays used a 9-2 run over the next eight minutes, though, finally gave them a lead at 14-13 after a fastbreak layup off a steal by Kreider. Kreider added to the run with an old-fashioned 3-point play, as the Blue Jays continued on to take a 21-16 lead before Manges scored the final points of the half by draining a 3-pointer to make it a two-point game at the break.
 
In the second half, the two teams traded buckets through the first three minutes, but a pair of free throws from Rachel Forjan started an 18-5 run that occupied the next 10 minutes and gave the Blue Jays a 41-26 lead with 8:57 left.
 
Over the next six minutes, the Warriors used a 15-6 run to close within six points after a layup by Calella  with 2:42 remaining. Senior Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) cleared out an ensuing rebound and then got the ball on the low block to make it a four-point game with 1:56 left. However, as the shot clock ran down on Elizabethtown's next possession, Nikki Thompson hit a 3-pointer and then came up with a steal with 1:09 left. From there, the Blue Jays hit six free throws in the last 30 seconds to seal the win.
 
Antonelli posted six points, seven rebounds and four steals and sophomore Chelsea Henderson (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) added six points and five rebounds.
 
Elizabethtown was led by 17 points and 12 rebounds from Kreider while Kendra Beittel added 14 points. Emily Martin added three points, four blocks and 12 rebounds. Rachel Forjan posted four assists and Thompson posted eight points and six rebounds.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Jan. 29, when they start a stretch of five out of six games in the friendly confines of the Dutch Burch Court at Lamade Gym against Alvernia at 6 p.m.
